Donald Trump's strict parenting approach toward a rowdy young Barron revealed in throwback video
PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: With five grown children from three marriages, President-elect Donald Trump has spent decades acing the fatherhood game.
But his youngest son Barron Trump has always been a bit of an enigma, largely staying out of the spotlight even as his famous father dominates it.
Now, thanks to a resurfaced video shared by the Reverend Franklin Graham on November 19, we’ve been gifted a peek at the parenting style Trump adopted for Barron—and let’s just say it’s a mix of old-school strictness, unexpected gentleness, and that classic Trumpian flair.
This older video from CNN shows @realDonaldTrump giving a young Barron Trump fatherly instruction before he goes off to school. He told him to get all A’s, and when he’s older, no drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes, and no tattoos! That’s one thing we’re missing—more parents being… pic.twitter.com/40r2dc2V1A

Throwback video shows Donald Trump laying out his expectations from Barron Trump
The video shows a young Barron Trump, just four years old, gearing up for his first day of preschool. The year is likely 2010, though it feels like a lifetime ago in Trump-world.
In the recently resurfaced footage, Donald appears to be doling out some very Trump-esque fatherly advice. He can be seen instructing his wide-eyed son, "No drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes, and you know what else—no tattoos." Oh, and there was also the academic directive: Barron was expected to bring home nothing but straight A's.
It’s a lot to take in, especially for a child whose biggest concern at the time was probably whether snack time included juice boxes. But Graham praised Trump’s approach, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to declare, "That’s one thing we’re missing—more parents being parents."
While Trump's advice to Barron might scream "involved parent," the jury’s out on just how hands-on he really was during those early years. In a Parenting interview, Melania Trump—Barron’s mother, casually revealed, "[Donald] didn’t change diapers, and I am completely fine with that."
Body language expert weighs in on Donald Trump's parenting approach toward Barron Trump
For all his larger-than-life persona, Donald Trump has shown surprising flashes of gentleness when it comes to Barron Trump. Body language expert Judi James once analyzed a behind-the-scenes clip from a 2010 photoshoot featuring the president-elect, Melania, and a young Barron, noting how uncharacteristically subdued the real estate mogul seemed.
"It’s interesting to see how a man who normally needs to dominate any scene and hog any spotlight suddenly looks more subdued and low-key," James told The Irish Star. "Trump looks happy to stand admiring his wife and youngest son Barron from the sidelines, even saying he doesn’t want to interrupt by joining the pose."
When Barron got a little rambunctious during the shoot, Donald didn’t bark orders or get flustered. Instead, a simple, "Barron, be a good boy," was enough to get his son back on track.
"Trump seemed to understand the power of gentle persuasion and praise here, and watching Barron's confidence ... suggested his dad's approach had been working well," James pointed out.
Barron Trump is now a 'cool sleeper' at New York University
Fast-forward to today and Barron Trump is no longer the cheeky kindergartner his dad sent off to school with warnings about tattoos and straight A’s. Now a college student at NYU, Barron has grown into what his sister-in-law Lara Trump describes as "cool"—and apparently, a bit of a sleeper hit within the Trump family.
In a podcast appearance, Lara sang Barron’s praises saying, "He’s so cool. That’s like the one word I’d use for Barron. He’s very cool. He’s like the sleeper a little bit. He’s kind of stayed out of the spotlight, probably intentionally."
And while Barron’s knack for staying under the radar is admirable, it hasn’t stopped his family from lauding his contributions. Lara credited Barron as an "instrumental figure" in Trump's recent campaign, saying he deserves "serious credit" for his father's victory in the 2024 election, as per Nicki Swift.
