Tiger Woods withdraws from Genesis after his mother's death: I'm just not ready'

WASHINGTON, DC: Tiger Woods will not be making his return to PGA Tour golf at The Genesis Invitational this week despite earlier plans to compete.

Woods announced Monday, February 10, At that he is withdrawing from the tournament, citing the death of his mother, Kultida Woods, less than a week ago.

The Genesis Invitational, hosted by Woods, is taking place at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego instead of Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles due to damage from recent wildfires.

The tour will be held from Thursday through Sunday in San Diego. Tiger Woods had initially planned to compete but ultimately decided against it.

"I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready," Woods wrote in a statement on social media.

"I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss," the pro golfer wrote further. 

"Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom’s passing," Woods added.

Tiger Woods' mother Kultida was his biggest supporter  

Tiger Woods has played a limited number of tournaments in recent years due to injuries.

Last season, he participated in just five events before undergoing season-ending back surgery.

His last PGA Tour appearance was at the British Open in July, where he missed the third-round cut. He also withdrew from The Genesis Invitational last year due to illness, according to USA Today. 

The 15-time major winner announced his mother’s death on February 4. Kultida Woods was 81, though Woods did not provide a cause of death. 



 

"It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning. My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable," Woods wrote.

"She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible," Woods added.

"She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family," he wrote, concluding with: "Love you Mom."

Despite the personal loss, Tiger Woods was able to celebrate his son Charlie Woods' 16th birthday on February 8, as per Hello!

He shares Charlie and his 17-year-old daughter Sam Woods with ex-wife Elin Nordegren.



 

Woods’ decision to withdraw from The Genesis Invitational came a day after a White House pool report confirmed that he and Charlie played a round of golf with former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday morning.

Woods, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, and golfer Adam Scott signed a statement confirming that Monahan and Scott met with Trump at the White House to discuss ways to unify professional golf.
