MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz reflected on his 2024 vice presidential debate performance against Republican JD Vance, acknowledging that his “Minnesota nice” approach may have been excessive and contributed to a perception of weakness.
Speaking at the MinnPost Festival over the weekend, Walz said he understands why former Vice President Kamala Harris criticized his debate demeanor in her new book.
Walz, who stumbled and made gaffes during the October 1, 2024, debate, was widely described as “midwestern nice,” with the discussion noted for being largely civil. During the MinnPost talk, Walz admitted that his civility may have inadvertently helped Vance appear more competent and prepared.

In his conversation at the MinnPost Festival, Walz addressed Harris’ criticism directly. “As far as the book and things like that go, I think she has every right to be critical. I do think I let her down on a couple things,” Walz said.
“And I warned them my Minnesota nice thing is if somebody’s being nice to me, I’ll be nice to them … These people have seen me debate. I know my subject. I’m pretty good at it. I don’t think I’m particularly mean.”

Moderator Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked whether Walz believed he had allowed Vance to demonstrate a more collegial side during the debate. Walz conceded that this might have happened, explaining that he had not expected Vance to be cordial.
“It did matter though, and I think in the moment we were in, in preparing for that, and quite honestly, we did not prepare for him to be more cordial. The expectation was that he would do the false attacks and do some of that. And they didn’t,” Walz said.

He added that his goal was to seek common ground, especially on issues like immigration reform, while staying attentive during the debate.
“And the teacher in me, and this is a nervous tick or habit that we have when you’re a teacher, when someone else is speaking next to you, you instinctively nod and listen and try and listen,” he said. “And that was viewed as, and the vice president took it, that I was agreeing on some of the things that were a personal attack on her. And it wasn’t that at all."

LOL!…
“Tim Walz is an idiot. We should be critical of Kamala for picking an idiot instead of the (hurts to say this) more competent Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania,” one post read.

Kamala Harris criticizes Tim Walz’ debate performance
In her book '107 Days,' Harris called out Walz for “nodding and smiling” while Vance attacked her, suggesting that Vance duped Walz with a “fake bipartisanship” and overly kind attitude.
“I told the television screen: ‘You’re not there to make friends with the guy who is attacking your running mate,’” Harris wrote.

The debate’s reception was similarly critical among media outlets. On MSNBC’s 'Morning Joe' on October 2, 2024, a panel discussed Walz’s performance, expressing disappointment over his inability to counter Vance effectively and highlighting his missteps regarding the Hong Kong claim.

Walz’s acknowledgment of his overly civil approach underscores the challenges candidates face in high-stakes debates: balancing personal demeanor with the need to vigorously defend running mates and policy positions.
