LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tom Cruise is one of the few stars who realizes that legacy sequels have emerged as one of the most popular genres of Hollywood IP in recent years.

According to Variety, Tom Cruise is in preliminary negotiations to play the lead in a follow-up to his 1990 film 'Days of Thunder', which tells the story of a racing car driver who gets hired to a new NASCAR team under Robert Duvall's leadership.

'Days of Thunder' was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (with his late producing partner Don Simpson) and directed by the late Tony Scott.

Sources claimed that Bruckheimer, who also produced 'Top Gun: Maverick,' is in talks to helm this project.

Since Cruise has a lot on his plate, including the upcoming 'Mission: Impossible 8' film, a new project from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and a follow-up to 'Top Gun: Maverick,' it is safe to assume that the 'Days of Thunder' sequel is still far off.

A studio insider told The Hollywood Reporter about a potential 'Days of Thunder' sequel, "He’s talking [to Paramount] about 'Top Gun' and 'Days of Thunder'. It’s going to be what comes together first in terms of a script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script."

Tom Cruise got formal writing credit for 'Days of Thunder'

'Days of Thunder' chronicles the adventures of Cole Trickle, a tenacious race car driver with an impeccable name, who is hired by a new NASCAR team run by Robert Duvall, a retired racing icon.

Cruise has a significant link to the movie: he co-wrote the story with screenwriter Robert Towne, earning him the first and only formal writing credit on the movie to date.

He also met Nicole Kidman there, whom he later married and both remained together for 11 years before parting ways in 2001. Kidman made her Hollywood debut in the film as a neurosurgeon who develops feelings for Cole.

Racing movies have also gained popularity recently, from Joseph Kosinski's 'Maverick' in 2019 to Brad Pitt's 'F1' the following year.
