Tom Cruise to play Elon Musk-inspired billionaire in upcoming movie as he aims for first acting Oscar
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tom Cruise is causing a stir in Hollywood as he prepares for a groundbreaking role that could secure him his first Oscar win.
The 62-year-old four-time Oscar nominee is not only starring in but also producing an upcoming untitled Warner Bros movie, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro G Inarritu.
The film will feature a powerhouse ensemble including Oscar-nominated actress Sandra Huller ('Anatomy of a Fall'), Emmy winner John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons, and 'Talk to Me' star Sophie Wilde.
Tom Cruise set to portray a powerful billionaire in star-studded film
The 'Vanilla Sky' star will portray an Elon Musk-like billionaire who faces a monumental professional crisis.
“For once, Tom is playing somebody with more juice than Tom has in his own real life,” the source reveals, noting that while Cruise isn’t playing the Tesla mogul directly, his character bears a striking resemblance to the tech mogul, reflecting “somebody with that level of power, wealth, and influence.”
While the plot remains under wraps, reports suggest the story revolves around the most powerful man in the world, whose efforts to prove he is humanity’s savior go disastrously wrong, reported Deadline.
“The script is under lock and key, but what’s shocking is the super-stacked cast Tom and his team have assembled, including getting Sandra Hüller in her biggest English-language role to date,” the insider added.
“This is a major flex, and it’s shocking because these are the kind of actors who wouldn’t be caught dead in a Mission: Impossible movie and are extremely picky and script-focused when it comes to choosing movies. All of them have been leads in major hits and major successes," per In Touch.
Cruise aims for his first Oscar with globe-trotting role
The buzz surrounding this project has many speculating that Cruise is aiming for his first Oscar win. Despite multiple nominations for 'Born on the Fourth of July', 'Jerry Maguire', 'Magnolia', and 'Top Gun: Maverick', he has yet to secure the coveted award.
“This is a pretty loud-and-clear signal to Hollywood that Tom wants back into the awards races in a major way,” the source claimed.
“And they want to get this movie out next fall at the latest. Shooting starts in a few weeks, and it’s going to be a real globe-trotting production, which of course is how Tom likes it!”
However, Cruise isn’t stopping there. He’s also eyeing another ambitious project —filming a movie in outer space.
“He still counts on his relationship with Elon to assist in the planned space-station movie he still wants to make in the next three years,” the source said.
This project, first announced by NASA in 2020, has fans eagerly awaiting updates. Cruise recently shared with Variety, “We’ve been working on it diligently. We’ll see where we go.”
