Tori Spelling says she 'took two years off of cooking' after Dean McDermott split: 'It was triggering'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tori Spelling opened up about how her divorce from Dean McDermott changed her relationship with cooking.
The actress shared that she stepped away from the kitchen after their breakup, finding it emotionally difficult to continue an activity once shared with her ex-husband.
Tori Spelling says cooking with Dean McDermott often led to fights
During the Fourth of July episode of her 'MisSPELLING' podcast titled "Miss 4th of July," Tori Spelling revealed how cooking became difficult after her marriage ended.
'The Beverly Hills, 90210' alum admitted she stopped making her own meals after their split, saying, “Since the divorce, like, I think that's something that we always did together was cook because cooking, oddly, we would always fight in the kitchen, Dean and I.”
Spelling, 52, officially filed for divorce in March 2024, citing irreconcilable differences after 18 years of marriage. The couple had separated in June 2023.
She said part of the tension came from their different cooking styles.
“Only because everyone has their technique and different ways of doing things. He went to culinary school, so he's actually a trained chef. He would always want to show me the proper ways, but I'm like a DIY home cook. And if it's not messy, it didn't come from the heart,” Spelling shared.
The actress recalled how McDermott preferred order in the kitchen, saying, “Dean is a 'clean up as you go' kind of person. I'm like, 'I don't wanna' and he's always like, 'You know, you need a bigger pot for that or a bigger bowl.' And it's true. I would always manage to find the smallest bowl or smallest pot to cook things in, and I don't know why."
She reflected on possibly doing it as a challenge for herself. “I don't like the easy road, clearly … I don't know,” Spelling said during the podcast.
The tension made her stop cooking altogether. “So when we split up, I honestly took like two years off of cooking,” she revealed.

“We would instead opt for things like premade meals or order in Postmates,” she said.
Spelling acknowledged it wasn’t a sustainable solution, before adding, "But it was like I needed a break and it was triggering. Maybe because our last fight before we broke up took place in the kitchen. Could be that. Maybe."
But now, Spelling is back at cooking and hopes to keep going. "Anyway… I've been getting back into cooking lately, and I hope to keep going with it,” she said.
She closed her thoughts by apologizing for getting emotional. "Sorry. I didn't mean to get all dark there, but just sharing my feelings," Spelling concluded.
