LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIS: Alabama Barker, the 18-year-old daughter of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, has revealed her decision to start taking weight-loss medication in response to persistent online body-shaming, as reported by US Weekly.

In a candid TikTok video reposted by a fan on July 16, Alabama addressed her critics and explained her motivations.

“I’m on weight-loss medication because I’m tired of being fat and photographing like a damn ogre,” Alabama confessed while doing her makeup. “I have, like, this thing where I photograph so ugly and people are like, ‘Oh my god, you’re so fat and you’re so ugly'. It’s like, I see what you guys are seeing, but just, like, meet me in person. I feel like I really don’t look like that.”

As she did her makeup, the star revealed she was taking a weight-loss pill.

Her mother, Shanna Moakler, has also mentioned about her use of weight-loss medication. In June, Shanna disclosed that she began taking Mounjaro after the death of her parents left her in a difficult emotional state. “I was in a very, very dark place. I stopped dieting. I stopped exercising. I just ate like s**t. I was so devastated, and I missed my f***g mom and dad,” Shanna told People magazine.

Shanna, who faced media scrutiny during her ex-husband Travis Barker’s relationship with Kourtney Kardashian, admitted to using food as a coping mechanism for her grief. She turned to Mounjaro to manage her weight during this challenging time.

In late April, Shanna addressed speculation about cosmetic surgery in a social media post, asserting, “I’ve had no cosmetic surgery done to my body!! Let’s stop assuming, not saying I never would, but just not in this moment have I had anything done.”

In a TikTok video reposted by a fan on July 16, Alabama shared her struggles with self-image and the pressure she feels to meet certain beauty standards.

The revelation has sparked a variety of reactions online, with many expressing empathy and concern for the young star. One user commented, “My inner 18-year-old cries for this young girl. At 38 I look back at photos of when I was that age (I was also terribly weight insecure but only a size 6) and wish I could just go back in time and hug that person. We are so hard on ourselves. How do we not see what is right before our eyes. Messing with weight pills and diets at that age just sets you up for a lifetime of battles. If only she could see how beautiful she is.”

Another user sympathized with the pressure Alabama faces, “Can't imagine growing up in this world of Great Expectations. If you look good, you're suspected. If you look normal, you'd better ‘get that fixed'.”

Some users expressed sadness over the societal emphasis on physical appearance. One wrote, “I’m so saddened when I see young/older women who believe their 'only worth' is attached to their body and physical appearance. Such a waste of what could be a wide and varied living experience over many decades of worldly awe and personal fulfillment!”

However, not all reactions were supportive. One user criticized Alabama, saying, “Vain child cries about her perfectly good figure. She needs counselling about her weight, because there is nothing wrong with it. If a doctor gave her a prescription for weight loss drugs they should be struck off for malpractice.”

Another user commented on the environment Alabama grew up in, stating, “She lives with the Kardashians. Grew up with a mom obsessed with appearance and plagued by severe insecurities. I feel sorry for her.”
