WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump recently requested Elon Musk's SpaceX to assist in bringing back the two astronauts who are "stranded" on the International Space Station (ISS), most likely Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore.

"The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so. Terrible that the Biden administration left them there so long," Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Donald Trump requests Elon Musk's SpaceX to 'go get' two stranded astronauts

President Trump claimed that the Joe Biden administration "virtually abandoned" two astronauts who have been on the ISS since June 2024, despite NASA's repeated assurances that it would bring them home soon.

Trump requested entrepreneur Musk to "go get" the two astronauts as soon as possible.

"I have just asked Elon Musk and @SpaceX to ‘go get’ the 2 brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"They have been waiting for many months on @Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!" he added.

Musk is the CEO of SpaceX, the owner of the social media platform X, and the director of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency.

For reference, the two NASA astronauts boarded Boeing's Starliner Spacecraft in June 2024 for an eight-day journey to the ISS. Starliner was certified to transport NASA astronauts to and from the ISS during the 10-day journey, per Florida Today.

NASA decided to return the spacecraft without the crew after months of postponing the return to investigate thruster issues that arose during the ISS docking. Starliner landed without any crew members in New Mexico last September.

NASA instead launched a new SpaceX spaceship later that month with two open seats to allow for a crossover period between astronauts, stating that Wilmore and Williams would be sent home aboard that ship as soon as the agency's next crew, Crew-10, got to the ISS.

The new plan for Crew-10 is to launch into space by the end of March at the latest. According to NASA, the two astronauts are not stranded and are in good health, per HuffPost.

The agency also announced in December that it had recently restocked the space station, stating that it was fully provisioned "with everything the crew needs, including food, water, clothing and oxygen".

Internet rejoices as 'Commander Elon' responds to Donald Trump's request

Social media users expressed joy over Elon Musk's response to President Trump's request. Some praised the X owner for his dedication to returning the astronauts, writing: "Commander Elon to the rescue."

Trump's followers applauded the president for considering ways to assist the astronauts as a second one added, "TRUMP cares about every Americans! Even those who are not on Earth."

"America is so back," chimed in one while another added, "Great news! Bring them home!"

One said, "Amazing what you can do with the right people calling the shots."

Several others praised Musk and his SpaceX for potentially carrying out the task as one added, "Thank you Elon for saving lives in outer space."

Another added, "That’s absolutely thrilling news! The upcoming SpaceX rescue mission to bring those astronauts home is going to be an epic endeavor! You all are truly the heroes of space exploration!"

"Go get ‘em, continuing to do amazing things," exclaimed one.

Another added, "I can only imagine how cool this is for you on a personal level. This is truly remarkable."

Meanwhile, others raised concerns about Musk's approach to the request, citing the current effort to return the astronauts home.

"So Crew 10 earlier than March? How would that even work... Or is SpaceX sending a different vehicle?" questioned one.

Another remarked, "What has changed? Does this accelerate crew-10 or will it involve a new mission?"
