MIAMI, FLORIDA: President Donald Trump broke his silence on Wednesday, November 5, on the victory of Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who won New York City’s mayoral race, branding him a “communist” and accusing Democrats of steering the country toward chaos.
Speaking to business leaders at the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump said that Mamdani’s election symbolized what “Congressional Democrats wish to do to America.”
“If you want to see what Congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the results of yesterday’s election in New York, where their party installed a communist as the mayor of the largest city in the nation,” Trump said.
“Remember, I used to say we’d never have a socialist elected to any post in our country... We skipped socialists… we put in the communists instead,” the president added.
Trump labels it as ‘communism vs common sense’
The remarks marked Trump’s first pointed reaction to Mamdani’s win over Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent with Trump’s last-minute support.
Trump’s remarks came during a high-profile session of the American Business Forum, hosted by Fox News anchor Bret Baier and attended by notable figures.
This included Lionel Messi, Will Smith, Argentinian President Javier Milei, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
In his speech, Trump cast Mamdani’s win as part of a broader ideological clash defining next year’s midterms.
He said, "Our opponents are hellbent on turning America into Communist Cuba or Socialist Venezuela."

“After last night’s results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear, we have a choice between communism and common sense,” Trump said to applause.
“And as long as I’m in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape, or form,” he declared.
He went on to frame the contest between Democrats and Republicans as one between “economic nightmare” and “economic miracle.”
“They want higher spending for government and illegal aliens, we want bigger paychecks for American workers and families,” Trump said.
“They stand for crime and chaos and corruption, we stand for law and order and justice and strong borders,” he added.
Trump takes a jab at Zohran Mamdani
While avoiding Mamdani’s name at first, Trump eventually referenced the new mayor directly, calling him "a communist."
He lamented the outcome and said, “On Nov 5 2024, the American people reclaimed our government. We restored our sovereignty…we lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it, don’t worry about it.”

Trump’s criticism follows reports that he privately expressed frustration at the election results, which handed Democrats another symbolic win after several high-profile Republican losses on Tuesday.
