Speaking at a White House event, Trump argued that the Chinese-owned app played a significant role in his election victory and used the rankings to question claims that TikTok poses only risks to the United States.
The remarks come as TikTok's long-term future in the US remains under scrutiny, with the administration continuing to pursue a deal that would place the platform under majority American ownership.
Trump touts TikTok popularity
Trump said he recently received platform rankings showing him leading all TikTok personalities.
"The new numbers just came out. You know who the number one person in TikTok is, by far? Trump. Me," he said. "Taylor Swift was number 11. I'm number one on TikTok, by far."
The president argued that his success on the platform undermined claims that TikTok only spread harmful influence.
"I'm saying all things like I love our country, we've got to stop communism," Trump said, adding that the app had such broad influence, it helped amplify his message.
He also claimed TikTok contributed to his election victory, saying, "I think it helped me win the election in a landslide."
Trump defends TikTok amid China debate
Trump acknowledged ongoing concerns over TikTok's Chinese ownership but said that the situation has changed because American investors now have a significant stake in the platform's US operations.
He revealed that he discussed TikTok directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying many believed Xi would reject any proposal involving the app.
"I called President Xi, and everyone said he was a hard no," Trump said. "But I said it's a good thing for TikTok, but it's good for us too."
The president also pushed back against critics who continue to call for banning the platform, mentioning China analyst Gordon Chang by name while arguing that the discussion often paints an overly negative picture.
While reiterating that China remains America's chief competitor, Trump said he believes the platform can continue operating if US interests are protected, adding that American companies now play a key role in TikTok's future.
