WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Wednesday, June 10, endorsed Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, positioning the lawyer as a key ally in defeating the "Radical Left" in the country's upcoming runoff election.

Trump’s backing signals a major effort to realign the US relationship with Colombia through a candidate he describes as a "Smart, Strong, and Tough Leader."

Trump endorses Abelardo de la Espriella for president

The endorsement comes as Colombia prepares for a pivotal June 21 runoff election, with Trump stressing that the outcome will be critical to future bilateral relations.

"Congratulations to Colombian Presidential Candidate, “El Tigre (THE TIGER),” Abelardo de la Espriella, a Smart, Strong, and Tough Leader, on his decisive Victory in the first round of the Colombian Presidential Election!" Trump stated, framing the contest as a battle between conservative governance and a "Radical Left Marxist."



Trump backs De la Espriella's crime crackdown

Trump’s support is rooted in a shared vision for national security and economic reform, with the president expressing confidence that a De la Espriella administration would restore stability to the region.

Trump highlighted his confidence in the candidate's agenda, noting, "As President, Abelardo will be tremendously successful in leading Colombia to Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, Crack Down on Crime and illicit components, and Restore LAW AND ORDER!"

He further added that De la Espriella shares his patriotic dedication, stating that the candidate "fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America."

Trump pledges US support for Colombia ally

As the June 21 runoff approaches, the international stakes have become increasingly clear, with Trump promising that a victory for "El Tigre" would secure the full backing of the United States.

"The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States which, if Abelardo wins, and because of his competence and love of his Country, will have the total support and strength of the United States behind him," Trump wrote.

By formally endorsing De la Espriella, Trump has cast the election as a defining moment for the future of the hemisphere.

"Because of his tremendous accomplishments in life, and his political support for me, it is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement. “EL TIGRE” ABELARDO DE LA ESPRIELLA WILL NOT LET THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OF COLOMBIA DOWN. It will rise to a new height of Greatness!"
