WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump addressed attendees at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, Feb 5. In his speech, he argued that the 2020 election was unfair and sharply criticized Democrats. He called it 'rigged'.

He later turned to international sports, saying he helped secure both the Olympics and the 2028 World Cup for the United States. POTUS also made several sweeping promises. One of them involved scrapping the Johnson Amendment.

Trump fumes over recognition, revives election grievance at prayer event

Trump mixed celebration with grievance during his appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast, revisiting achievements he says never earned proper credit and frustrations that still drive him.

Reflecting on global events he helped bring to the country, Trump suggested he was sidelined from the very stages he worked to secure.

He remarked, "I got the Olympics to come to the United States, and I got the World Cup to come to the United States, and I probably won't even be invited to be there," before pivoting to the political fallout he believes followed. He continued, "and I was really angry, and then they. Rig the election. And then I said I'm coming back."

Trump repeated a claim he has brought up several times before, saying the 2020 election was unfair. He raised the topic again multiple times in 2025, including during a White House gathering, where he said it pushed him to run again.

While speaking at a Kennedy Center board meeting that year, he also highlighted his role in helping bring the 2028 Olympics and the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the United States, saying those wins were overshadowed by political conflict.

Trump also spoke about religion and politics during the event. He said religious leaders should be freer to talk about elections because many people want guidance from them.

He told the audience, "People like me and people, like a lot of people, they want to hear from ministers, they want to hear from priests, they want to hear from them. And you were restricted from talking about very important things like who to elect if you said that you were gone, you couldn’t do it, even if you said it in a very nice way, because they were going to be better for the church."

US prepares to host two of the world’s biggest sports events

During an interview with NBC anchor Tom Llamas, Trump was asked about security for the upcoming games in the United States. He responded confidently and dismissed any concerns, saying the country would host "very safe Olympics and a very safe World Cup."

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the next global men’s soccer tournament, and it will run from June 11 to July 19 as per the FIFA website.  Games will be played across 16 cities in North America, with most matches in the United States and the rest split between Mexico and Canada.

Soon after that, the country will host another sports event, as per LA28. Los Angeles is scheduled to hold the 2028 Summer Olympics from July 21 to August 6, bringing the Games back to the country for the first time since 1996.
