WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump’s latest polling numbers on inflation have triggered shock among analysts, with Harry Enten calling them some of the worst he has ever seen for any US president.

The data shows Trump is 49 points underwater on inflation, with 70 percent of Americans disapproving of how he is handling the issue, compared to just 21 percent who approve.

Harry Enten says Trump’s inflation numbers are ‘mind-blowing’

Speaking on Wednesday, April 29, Enten reacted to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll that paints a troubling picture for Trump on one of the most important issues for American voters, rising prices.

“Donald John Trump is in the worst position he has ever been on inflation, and more than that, these are the worst numbers I’ve ever seen for any president,” Enten said.

“It’s mind-blowing. You just never see numbers like this,” he added, indicating how unusual it is for any president to perform this poorly on such a key economic issue.

What makes the numbers even more striking is that inflation itself is not at its peak. According to the data cited, current inflation levels are significantly lower than what the US experienced in previous years.

Despite that, Trump’s approval on the issue appears to be worse than expected, raising questions about how voters are viewing his handling of the economy.

Poll puts Trump behind Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter

The comparison with past presidents makes the numbers even more notable.

Enten pointed out that Joe Biden, whose presidency was heavily impacted by inflation, never reached the same level of negative approval.

Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on November 19 at the age of 96, was married to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter for 77 years. In her lifetime she was an activist and writer known to be an advocate for the elderly, affordable housing, mental health, and the protection of monarch butterflies. “You remember Joe Biden? Inflation absolutely crushed his presidency. But at his worst, according to Ipsos, he was just 43 points underwater,” Enten explained.

“So Trump is lower now on inflation than Joe Biden ever was, according to Ipsos,” he added.

The data also places Trump behind former President Jimmy Carter, who dealt with extremely high inflation during his time in office.

Citing historical figures, Enten noted that Carter’s net approval on inflation was -46 points in October 1980, when inflation stood at 12.8 percent. Trump’s current rating of -49 comes at a time when inflation is around three percent, making the comparison even more striking.

White House pushes back as economic concerns grow

The White House has defended Trump’s economic approach, pushing back against the negative interpretation of the polling.

In a statement, spokesperson Kush Desai said the president is “implementing his proven, first-term economic agenda of tax cuts, deregulation, and energy abundance.”

Desai also pointed to global factors, saying, “As cargo traffic in the Strait of Hormuz begins to normalize again and the disruptions of Operation Epic Fury begin to subside, Americans can rest assured that the best is yet to come.”

Poll shows majority of Americans say economy is on wrong track

The same April Ipsos poll shows a wider sense of unease about the state of the country’s economy. According to the survey, 64 percent of Americans believe the US is heading in the wrong direction, while only 19 percent think things are on the right track.

Trump’s overall approval rating has also taken a hit, dropping to 34 percent.

Taken together, the numbers highlight a challenging moment for the president, especially on an issue that directly affects everyday life.
