Trump reacts to George and Amal Clooney gaining French citizenship: ‘Good News!’
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump celebrated what he called “good news” after reports that George Clooney and Amal Clooney had become French citizens, using the moment to launch a fresh attack on the actor’s politics and career.
Trump reacted on Truth Social on Wednesday, December 31, mocking the Clooneys’ reported move and describing them as “two of the worst political prognosticators of all time.” The president framed their citizenship as a benefit to the United States, while criticizing France’s immigration policies and linking them to Democratic leadership in the US.
Trump calls George Clooney ‘average guy who complained'
Trump shared his remarks in a lengthy Truth Social post, where he took aim at Clooney’s acting career and political influence.
“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is sadly in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote.
He went on to revisit Clooney’s criticism of President Joe Biden following a widely discussed debate performance, claiming the actor abandoned Biden during a fundraiser and later supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Kamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat,” Trump added.
Trump concluded by downplaying Clooney’s Hollywood stature, writing that the actor “got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies.” He added, “He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics."
George Clooney explains decision to raise family in France
Clooney has previously spoken openly about why he and his wife chose to live in France. In an interview with RTL radio earlier in December, the actor praised French culture and privacy norms.
“I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses,” Clooney said. “Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”
The actor owns multiple properties across Europe and the US, including an estate in Italy’s Lake Como region purchased in 2002 and a historic manor in England. The Clooneys also bought a wine estate in southern France, Domaine du Canadel, in 2021.
While they continue to own a New York apartment and a property in Kentucky, the couple reportedly sold homes in Los Angeles and Mexico over the past decade.
During an interview with Esquire, Clooney reflected on raising his children away from Hollywood’s spotlight. “I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood,” he said. “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.”
He added that France’s attitude toward fame played a key role in their decision, saying the country “kind of doesn’t give a s**t about fame” and allows his children to grow up without constant media attention"
