Trump rebukes Pope, clashes with Meloni, as Iran war tensions deepen
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Pope Leo XIV, saying the pontiff “doesn’t understand” the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In a phone interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera on Tuesday, April 14, Trump said the pope “shouldn’t be talking about war” and lacks insight into the situation.
Italian PM Giorgia Meloni draws Trump’s ire
Trump also lashed out at Giorgia Meloni after she called his remarks about the pope “unacceptable.”
“It’s her who’s unacceptable,” Trump said, accusing the Italian leader of downplaying the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran. He added that he was “shocked” by Meloni, whom he had previously praised, and questioned her stance on the conflict.
Responding to Trump’s criticism, Meloni defended her position, stressing that strong alliances require openness and honesty.
“When you’re friends and have allies… you also have to have the courage to say when you disagree,” she said, framing her stance as beneficial for Europe, the United States and the wider West.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also came to Meloni’s defence, praising her willingness to speak candidly.
He noted that Trump had previously described Meloni as courageous, adding that her remarks on the pope reflected the views of many Italians.
Tensions over Iran war and Hormuz
The US president further criticized Italy’s perceived lack of support in Washington’s military campaign against Iran, including efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
His remarks underscore growing friction between Washington and European allies over how to handle Tehran and the broader regional crisis.
The exchange highlights widening divisions between the US and key European partners over Iran, as diplomatic tensions rise alongside ongoing military challenges in the region.
