Trump refuses to take responsibility for controversies surrounding disastrous Arlington cemetery visit
ARLINGTON, TEXAS: Former president Donald Trump found himself embroiled in yet another controversy following his visit to Arlington National Cemetery.
The visit, which took place on Monday, August 26, was meant to honor fallen soldiers but quickly turned contentious due to Trump’s actions and the behavior of his staff.
Despite the backlash, Trump has refused to accept any responsibility, instead deflecting blame onto others, The Daily Beast reported.
Donald Trump refuses to take responsibility for controversial Arlington cemetery visit
Donald Trump on Monday visited the Arlington National Cemetery, a solemn place where countless US military personnel are buried. During his visit, Trump was seen smiling and giving a thumbs-up gesture near tombstones, a move that was widely criticized as disrespectful.
Trump, however, dismissed these criticisms, claiming that his visit was not motivated by a desire for publicity.
"I go there and they ask me to have a picture. And they say I was campaigning. I don’t need—the one thing I get is plenty of publicity. I don’t need that. I don’t need the publicity," Trump said on Thursday, August 29, during a campaign stop in Michigan.
Notably, Trump mistakenly stated that his visit took place on Wednesday, August 28, further fueling criticism that he was not taking the event seriously.
The controversy deepened when reports emerged of an altercation between a Trump staffer and a female employee of the cemetery.
According to NPR, the incident occurred when the employee tried to enforce a federal law prohibiting recording for political purposes. The Trump campaign, however, denied the altercation, instead claiming that the employee had suffered a "mental health episode."
The campaign also asserted that video footage would disprove NPR’s report, but no such footage has been released to date.
On Thursday, the Army confirmed that the Trump staffer had indeed "abruptly pushed" the female employee, backing NPR's account of the incident.
The New York Times, citing military officials, reported that the employee declined to press charges, fearing potential retribution from Trump’s supporters.
The New York Times also reported that the family of a Green Beret buried near Hoover’s gravesite expressed outrage after learning that Trump’s campaign had filmed the gravesite without their permission.
