WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump may have built a real estate empire, dominated US politics, and even had a Diet Coke button in the Oval Office - but when it comes to tech, he admits his youngest son Barron Trump has him completely beat.

In an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump couldn’t hide his amazement at Barron’s technical prowess. Apparently, after Trump tried turning off Barron’s laptop, the teenager managed to power it back up in minutes - something Trump found almost mystical.

Trump trolled over comments about Barron's tech aptitude

"I try turning off his — turn it off. I turn off his laptop. I said, oh, good. Now — and I go back five minutes later, he’s got his laptop. I said: 'How’d you do that?' 'None of your business, Dad,'” Trump quipped, recounting the exchange.

Barron, a freshman at New York University’s Stern School of Business, is apparently the family’s unofficial IT expert - and his father couldn’t be prouder. "He’s got an unbelievable aptitude in technology," Trump told Ingraham, as quoted by Mediaite.

The president's comments, however, sparked quite a roasting session on social media.

"OMG, he knows where the on switch is!" one posted on X.

"The kid is a super genius. He can turn on a computer. Amazing," another chimed in.

"A tremendous aptitude, the best aptitude the world has ever seen, nobody has had this kind of aptitude since the invention of computers…" someone else quipped mimicking Trump.

"Gotta be able to turn something on," a comment read.

"So 45 is amazed his 19-year-old can press a power button? Is that the bar now?" another wondered.

Barron’s role in Trump's 2024 presidential campaign

During Trump’s 2024 presidential run, Barron helped bridge the gap between his father and younger voters, using podcasts and digital platforms to bring in fresh support.

And his influence wasn’t lost on former first lady Melania Trump, who gushed about Barron’s savvy instincts.

“I’m very proud of him about his knowledge, even about politics and giving an advice to his father — he brought in so many young people. He knows his generation, because nowadays the young generation, they don’t sit in front of TV anymore,” she said in December.

She credited Barron for his strategic insight, adding, “He was very vocal, and he gave an advice to his father, and was incredible how he brought in a success because he knew exactly who his father needs to contact and to talk to."

With Trump back in the White House for his second term, one might assume Barron would be living in Washington, DC alongside his parents.

But the youngest Trump is staying put in New York, continuing his studies at NYU. And according to Melania, that decision was all about trusting her son’s independence.

"We teach them, we guide them, and then we give them the wings to fly," she told an outlet in January. "And I always respect Barron's yes and no and what he likes to do, where he would like to be."

Barron Trump steps into the limelight

Though he’s mostly kept a low profile compared to his older siblings, Barron had a viral moment last year when he was named one of 41 Florida GOP delegates ahead of the Republican National Convention. He even made a rare rally appearance in July last year, where Trump couldn’t help but tease his other sons, Don Jr and Eric.

“That’s the first time he’s done it. That’s the first time, right?” Trump said of Barron’s public appearance before turning to his older boys with a grin. “You’re pretty popular, he might be more popular than Don and Eric, we gotta talk about this. Hey Don, we gotta talk about this.”

Beyond politics, Barron is already proving himself as a force to be reckoned with. Designer Nathan Pearce, who collaborated with Barron on a collection of suits for Trump’s second inauguration, spoke highly of the 18-year-old’s impressive presence.

"He's well beyond his years in terms of experience, knowledge, history," Pearce told Women’s Wear Daily in January. He described Barron as "down-to-earth, nice as can be, and hospitable," but also someone who can hold his own among business elites.

"He’s just very fascinating to talk to," Pearce said. "You put him in a room with star businessmen and he will hold his own. He can talk to them all day because he’s witty, smart, and has a dry sense of humor."
