WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the White House on Tuesday, March 3, marking his first in-person meeting with a foreign ally since the US-Israel military operation against Iran began.
During the Oval Office meeting, Trump expressed significant surprise that the Iranian regime has chosen to launch retaliatory strikes against many of its Middle Eastern neighbors.
The President noted that Tehran is now "hitting countries that were... neutral" and had lived alongside Iran for a long time.
Trump characterized these actions as a demonstration of "the level of evil that we’re dealing with," specifically pointing out that Iran is targeting civilian locations such as hotels and apartment buildings rather than military objectives.

Trump touted the overwhelming success of the operation so far, claiming that the Iranian regime's military infrastructure has been almost entirely neutralized.
According to the President, Iran currently has "no navy," "no air force," and "no air detection" as a result of the systematic strikes.
"Their radar has been knocked out, and just about everything’s been knocked out," Trump told reporters, asserting that the US and Israel are "doing very well."
He maintained that the strikes have had a "very powerful impact" because virtually every strategic asset the regime possessed has been destroyed.

Chancellor Merz stated that he is on the "same page" with President Trump regarding the necessity of "getting this terrible regime in Tehran away."
Merz expressed hope that the American and Israeli armies would continue to "do the right things" to bring the conflict to a swift conclusion and establish a new government committed to peace and freedom.
While the administration has offered various explanations for the strikes, including "imminent threats" and nuclear prevention, Trump has increasingly called for the Iranian people to take control.
Merz emphasized the importance of discussing "the day after" to determine what kind of leadership will follow the current administration in Tehran.
Forced hand and regional escalation
"Did Israel force your hand to launch these strikes against Iran?"@POTUS: "No... Based on the way the negotiation was going, I think [Iran] was going to attack first, and I didn't want that to happen — so if anything, I might've forced Israel's hand." pic.twitter.com/7fi44RFlge

Trump defended the timing of the initial strikes, suggesting he "might have forced Israel's hand" to act because he believed Iran was preparing to attack first.
He insisted that Israel did not pressure the US into the conflict, but rather that his own assessment of negotiations with "lunatics" led him to favor a preemptive strike.
The President observed that the countries Iran is now retaliating against are "all fighting against them and fighting strongly against them."
This shift in regional dynamics comes as Merz also pushed for discussions on the war in Ukraine, insisting that Ukraine must preserve its territory and security interests as that conflict moves toward an end.
