WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump wasted no time taking a jab at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, saying the Democratic leader had been broken by Republicans during the recent government shutdown showdown.

During an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on 'The Ingraham Angle' on Monday night, November 8, Trump mocked Schumer’s handling of the crisis and claimed the GOP came out on top.

“I think he made a mistake in going too far,” Trump said. “He thought he could break the Republicans and the Republicans broke him.

Trump says Chuck Schumer ‘lost his talent’ after government shutdown

Trump didn’t stop there; he went on to accuse Schumer of losing his political edge. “I’ve never seen a politician change so much,” Trump told Ingraham. “He was a pretty talented guy. He’s lost his talent.”

The biting remarks came after Schumer faced widespread criticism from within his own party following Sunday’s procedural vote that paved the way to reopen the federal government. The decision followed a tense standoff that left several Democrats fuming over what they viewed as a weak compromise.

Democrats lash out at Chuck Schumer after divisive shutdown vote

Schumer’s critics argue that he failed to keep the Democratic caucus united, resulting in seven Democrats, along with Sen Angus King (I-Maine), siding with Republicans to move forward with reopening the government without securing assurances on extending “ObamaCare” subsidies.

Although Schumer voted against the measure, citing the looming expiration of health-care subsidies, that didn’t stop the backlash from progressives who accused him of losing control of his party.

Rep Ro Khanna (D-Calif) didn’t mince words, declaring on X that Schumer is “no longer effective.”

Similarly, Rep Mark Pocan (D-Wis) ripped into the minority leader for refusing to endorse New York City’s Democratic mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, writing, “Don’t endorse or say who you voted for in NYC, despite there being a Dem candidate. Get Dem Senators to negotiate a terrible ‘deal’ that does nothing real about healthcare. Screw over a national political party. Profile of scourge? Next."

Progressive groups call for Chuck Schumer to step down

The outrage hasn’t been limited to individual lawmakers. Progressive organizations, including MoveOn and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, have joined the call for Schumer to resign as minority leader, accusing him of failing to represent the interests of the Democratic base.

As the fallout continues, Schumer finds himself in the crosshairs of both parties, with Trump and the GOP celebrating his perceived defeat while progressives question his leadership.

For Trump, the moment serves as another opportunity to highlight division within the Democratic Party. “He thought he could break the Republicans,” Trump repeated, smiling during the Fox News segment, “but the Republicans broke him.”
