WASHINGTON, DC: A decades-long Christmas Eve jazz tradition at the Kennedy Center was abruptly canceled this year after musician Chuck Redd withdrew from the event in protest of the venue's recent rebranding to include President Donald Trump's name.

The decision triggered backlash from Trump supporters online, who accused Chuck Redd of politicizing the holidays.

Supporters of the musician, however, praised the move as a stand on principle. The cancellation followed the addition of Trump's name to the historic performing arts center earlier this month.

Redd, a veteran jazz drummer and vibraphone player, announced the cancellation shortly before audience members were scheduled to take their seats for the annual 'Christmas Eve Jazz Jam', a concert he had hosted since 2006.

Backlash from Trump supporters floods social media

“When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert," Redd said in a statement.

Following the announcement, Trump supporters quickly criticized Redd across social media platforms. Some accused him of seeking attention or allowing political views to interfere with a holiday event.

“You can cancel your show, but all you’ve accomplished is cancelling yourself,” one user wrote. “The disappointment falls on you, not the Trump-Kennedy Center or the president. You’re just a performer who can easily be replaced.”

Another commenter wrote, "Cancelling a concert because of TDS instead of allowing people to celebrate the holidays and enjoy a performance. I hope everyone that attends any future concerts of yours – chooses the [sic] BOYCOTT YOU.”

A self-identified military veteran also criticized Redd, writing that he had served under six presidents regardless of political views, adding, “It’s men like you that make this country weak because you took the easy path and the one that gave you the attention you crave. A pathetic man acting like a child.”

At the same time, Redd received supportive messages, particularly on Instagram.

“Thank you, Mr Redd. We need more people of principle, not the sycophants orbiting this administration,” one supporter wrote.

Another said, “Merry Christmas!! You are a real one for sticking to your morals and saying no to fa**ism!”

Kennedy Center rebrand fuels broader dispute

The controversy stems from the Kennedy Center board's December 18 vote to rename the venue the 'Donald J Trump and John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts'.

Officials said that the vote was unanimous though some congressionally appointed ex officio Democratic members disputed the characterization.

In a statement, the center said that the decision recognized Trump's role in securing federal funding and protecting the institution.

"The unanimous vote recognizes that the current Chairman saved the institution from financial ruin and physical destruction," the statement read.
