Trump tells CNN reporter ‘be quiet’ in fiery Oval Office clash, White House piles on
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump clashed with CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes in the Oval Office on Monday, August 17, after she repeatedly pressed him about his outreach to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump told Holmes to “be quiet” several times, accused her of being “disrespectful” and called CNN “fake news” before the White House later issued its own attack on the reporter.
.@POTUS: "You're very disrespectful in front of this young man... You're a loud, boisterous person. You're Fake News. Be quiet. Be quiet. Be quiet. You're a fake reporter and you report FAKE NEWS." https://t.co/ag30QbC3Iu pic.twitter.com/BciRrLrCKD

The confrontation came during an Oval Office appearance in which Trump was honoring teenage lifeguard Ryder Williams, who had rescued a 10-year-old boy from dangerous waves in California.
Trump had also been discussing North Korea and his decision to scale back US-South Korean military exercises.
Trump shuts down repeated questioning
Another reporter first asked Trump about his decision to reduce the military drills, which he defended by saying his relationship with Kim was helping make the situation safer.
Trump said Kim had treated him with respect and that the two leaders understood each other. Holmes then followed up by asking whether Kim had requested that the exercises be scaled back.
Based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea. These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by… pic.twitter.com/IcVjiJyDX9

“Quiet. You’re very disrespectful,” Trump responded, before turning toward Williams and asking whether he found Holmes disrespectful.
Holmes identified herself as being with CNN. Trump responded by calling the network “fake news.”
She continued pressing him, saying she wanted to follow up on whether he had been speaking with Kim.
Trump again told her to “be quiet” and accused her of being a “loud, boisterous person” and “faking news.”
The exchange ended as another reporter moved on to a question about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
White House escalates attack afterward
Trump then rejected CNN reporting concerning the aircraft carrier, saying the ship had been maintained properly and describing the report as “fake news.”
The confrontation did not end when the Oval Office exchange concluded.
The White House’s rapid-response account subsequently singled out Holmes in a post attacking her professionalism and conduct.
.@KristenhCNN is a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession.@POTUS hosts a hero lifeguard in the Oval Office and she uses it as an opportunity to take a cheap shot about one of President Trump's staffers.

The account called Holmes a “disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment” and accused her of using Trump’s meeting with the teenage lifeguard to take a “cheap shot” at a White House staffer.
The clash unfolded as Trump faces questions over his latest North Korea policy.
He has ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, citing their cost and his relationship with Kim. South Korea has indicated that the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises would proceed, while critics have questioned whether scaling them back could weaken deterrence.
Trump has also confirmed that Kim responded to his recent outreach, although he has not disclosed details of the communication.
