WASHINGTON, DC: The Treasury Department has shared a new plan to include President Donald Trump’s signature on upcoming paper currency. This would be unusual, as current presidents are not typically featured on money.
In most cases, paper currency only carries the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the Treasurer. Adding a president’s signature would go against this long-standing custom.
Trump has recently added his name and image to several important national institutions. These include the US Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center, and even a newly named group of battleships.
Trump’s signature on US paper currency would mark a historic first
As the signature of Trump on upcoming paper currency is being taken seriously into consideration, the Treasury Department has said that his signature will appear on new dollar bills. If this happens, it would be the first time a sitting president’s signature is included on US paper money.
Officials say this move is meant to highlight both the country’s history and the president’s role. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, "There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name."
The department also shared that the change will begin rolling out this year, although full details are not yet available. Trump’s signature will appear together with Bessent’s on the notes. Traditionally, US paper money has only included the signatures of Treasury officials.
Treasurer Brandon Beach supported the decision, saying the move "is not only appropriate, but also well deserved." This announcement follows another recent decision. Earlier this month, officials approved the final design of a 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump’s image.
Federal panel approves 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump for 250th anniversary
Well, the signature idea is not the first. A similar move involving Trump came up just a few days ago. Recently, a federal arts panel cleared the design of a special gold coin featuring Trump. This 24-karat coin is meant to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day on July 4. The design shows him with his fists placed on a desk.
The Mint presented the design, after which the Commission of Fine Arts approved it. The panel agreed on it without any opposition, even though there were some doubts raised about whether it is legally allowed.
Vice-chairman James McCrery backed the proposal, saying, "I motion to approve this (coin) as presented, and with the strong encouragement that you make it as large as possible, all the way to three inches in diameter," as per BBC News.
At present, Calvin Coolidge remains the only president who has appeared on a coin while still serving in office.
