'Proof of life?': Trump's text-only interview with CNN's Jake Tapper sparks health speculation

WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump dropped a brand-new kind of presidential interview, one that sparked concerns about his health and whereabouts.
The 79-year-old commander-in-chief gave an “exclusive” interview to CNN’s 'State of the Union' host Jake Tapper on Sunday, October 5. However, it wasn't by phone, Zoom, or FaceTime. Trump texted his answers in.
CNN displayed graphics of Trump’s messages popping up on screen, complete with that signature all-caps style we’ve all come to expect from his posts on Truth Social.

Trump's text-only interview sparks questions
In the bizarre exchange, Trump discussed his hopes for peace in the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict. However, he made his stance on Hamas crystal clear. “Complete obliteration,” he wrote, if the militant group doesn’t agree to return hostages.
However, CNN viewers were far more interested in how Trump delivered his message than in what he said. Within minutes, social media was rife with speculation.
“‘Texted’… ‘Proof of life’?” one viewer asked on X.
Rep Daniel Goldman (D-NY) chimed in, “Have you ever seen a television interview done by text message? Ever? Trump couldn’t even do it by phone? Hasn’t been seen since Tuesday. Doesn’t know that the budget deal needs Democratic votes. We need a wellness check and the American people need to know what is wrong.”

We need a wellness check and the American people need to know what is wrong.
It seems the last time the public caught a glimpse of Trump before the interview aired was on Tuesday.
Ohio Senator JD Vance had posted a cozy photo of Trump and Melania dining with him and his wife, Usha, on Friday, but that didn’t stop the internet sleuths from speculating that Trump was hiding some supposed health issue.
It's always a good time when you get to have the boss over for dinner!

Usha and I were so grateful that President Trump and our lovely First Lady, Melania, could join us for dinner at the Vice President's Residence last night.🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/8XDsXyj8oD
Sleuths go into overdrive over Trump's text-only interview
When a short clip later surfaced showing Trump golfing over the weekend, doubters pounced. “How do you know that was from today?" one skeptic asked. "Trump couldn’t even do a telephone interview with Jake Tapper and had to resort to doing it by text message which seems to indicate he’s not capable of playing golf today.”

The same user wasn’t done. They followed up with another post that read, “CNN announces that Jake Tapper has interviewed Trump about the Gaza deal… The show opens and Tapper says the interview was via text message! What is wrong with Donald Trump so that he is not able to even do a telephone interview?”

Someone else piled on, “Anyone could have answered those questions for him. How does Tapper even ensure that was Trump? That was pathetic.”
Another baffled watcher declared, “This wasn’t an interview… It was SOMEONE texting Jake Tapper and how does anyone know if it really was Trump.. WTF is wrong with him that he can’t even use a phone to talk. Is he too busy golfing.”

Trump makes appearance at Navy's 250th anniversary celebration
Before critics could finish diagnosing him from afar, Trump reappeared in the flesh. Later that same day, the president popped up in Norfolk, Virginia, as the keynote speaker for the “America's Navy 250 Titans of the Sea: A Salute to the Fleet” celebration at Naval Station Norfolk.
“Today that eternal creed is written into the hearts of every sailor in the fleet,” Trump declared from the podium. “America’s sailors have proven time and again that our Navy does just the best job there is. Anything having to do with sailing the oceans, there’s nobody to compete.”

Trump reassured military members that their paychecks were safe despite the ongoing government shutdown. “I want you to know that despite the current Democrat-induced shutdown, we will get our servicemembers every last penny. Don’t worry about it, it’s all coming," he announced.
He also pledged “across-the-board pay raises for every sailor and service member in the United States Armed Forces.”
Of course, he couldn’t resist lobbing one of his trademark jabs at the opposition. “We have to take care of this little gnat that’s on our shoulder called the Democrats,” Trump quipped, drawing laughs from the crowd. “They want to give all of our money to illegal aliens that pour into the country.”
