WASHINGTON, DC: A resurfaced clip of Tucker Carlson is sparking widespread online ridicule from both sides of the political aisle.

In footage from an October episode, Carlson claimed that Donald Trump sought to remove Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power to legalize gay marriage in the country. As the clip circulates again, critics are mocking Carlson’s remarks and revisiting his broader criticism of Trump’s actions, explaining why the comments are drawing renewed backlash.

What did Tucker Carlson claim about Trump?

During an October 29 podcast episode, Tucker Carlson raised the topic of US-backed regime change in Venezuela while speaking with guest Douglas Macgregor. On Sunday, January 4, independent journalist Nathan Livingstone, known for clipping far-right media, resurfaced part of the Carlson–Macgregor conversation online.

In the clip, Carlson dismissed democracy as a motive for US intervention in Venezuela and suggested that cultural issues could be driving the push to remove Nicolas Maduro. “We can safely discount democracy as a reason for affecting regime change in Venezuela.”

He argued, “We’re not going to go kill Nicolas Maduro because we don’t like the way he’s treating his people. It’s possible we’re mad that he doesn’t allow gay marriage. That is a distinct possibility, but no one will say that out loud.”

Carlson emphasized, “Not defending the regime, just saying. One of the most conservative countries in North or South or Central America.”

He continued, “Only El Salvador really comes close, which is much smaller, of course. And by the way, the US-backed opposition leader who would take Maduro’s place if he were taken out is, of course, pretty eager to get gay marriage in Venezuela. So to those of you who thought this whole project was globo-homo? Not crazy, actually.”

Macgregor questioned, “Why are we trying to install this woman? It makes no sense.” Carlson responded, “Well, because she’ll bring gay marriage to Venezuela, and that’s important. I mean, that’s what we stand for.”

Internet calls out Tucker Carlson’s ‘ridiculous’ claim about Trump

Critics from across the political spectrum wasted no time seizing on Tucker Carlson’s clip.

Pro-Trump commentator Dinesh D’Souza joined the backlash, sharing the footage and adding his own commentary: “The oldest living Groyper says it’s a “distinct possibility” that Trump captured Maduro because of Maduro’s opposition to gay marriage. Wow! He also says Maduro is a genuine social conservative, and that the US action is aimed at introducing gay marriage to Venezuela!”

Jared Polis, the Democratic governor of Colorado who is openly gay, responded with a tongue-in-cheek remark: “Oh, that would be nice!”

The Dispatch’s Jonah Goldberg wrote, “The best part is when he says “nobody will say that out loud” as if the fact that no one is actually saying this ridiculous thing is proof of its plausibility and their cowardice. I mean, no one will say “the US captured Maduro because vests have no sleeves” either. Quislings.”

One commenter shared, “He’s lost his mind. But we knew that even before this bit of lunacy.” Another commenter said, “Tucker has lost the plot.” An internet user tweeted, “In Tuckerland, Trump’s motive for arresting Maduro is to bring gay marriage to Venezuela.”
