DOHA, QATAR: Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson has said that he has plans to buy a house in Doha, Qatar, arguing that the move is meant to prove that he is a patriotic red-blooded American.
He made the comment while pushing back against the accusation that his company accepted money from Qatari investors.
Tucker Carlson denies taking any money from Qatar
During his appearance on the Doha Forum on Sunday, December 7, Carlson said that he was going to buy a property in the city on Monday.
He made the announcement while interviewing Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, referring to the accusation that he and his media company, the Tucker Carlson Network, have accepted funds from Qatari investors.
“I have been criticized as being a tool of Qatar, and I just want to say, which you already know, which is I have never taken anything from your country and don’t plan to,” Carlson said. “I am, however, tomorrow buying a place in Qatar.”
He continued, explaining, “I like the city, I think it’s beautiful, but also to make a statement that I’m an American and a free man and I’ll be wherever I want to be.”
Carlson’s announcement was met with a small round of applause from the crowd. Apart from the former Fox News host, the forum featured a mix of speakers, including Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr, and Bill Gates.
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Qatar's Hamas ties
Earlier, during the interview, Carlson asked Al Thani about critics like Sen Ted Cruz (R-TX), who called Qatar a “terror state,” based on its ties to Hamas.
Al Thani said more than a decade ago, Qatar was asked by the US and Israel to connect with Hamas, to maintain “communication” with Hamas leaders, and allow some of them to live in Qatar, which helped end the war in Gaza.
“All our support went to Gaza, to the people, under a very transparent process that the United States is fully aware of,” the prime minister said, adding that successive Israeli governments coordinated with Qatar on the delivery of humanitarian funds.
Al Thani also noted that the country will not be contributing to help rebuild Gaza. “We are not the ones who are going to write the check to rebuild what others destroyed,” he said. “When you are talking about Gaza, Israel flattened this land.”
