WASHINGTON, DC: Ty Cobb, former White House lawyer, unleashed a scathing critique of US District Judge Aileen Cannon on Friday, June 21, denouncing her for refusing to step down from Donald Trump's classified documents case, as per The New Republic.

Special Counsel Jack Smith has accused Trump of willfully retaining classified documents after leaving office and obstructing government efforts to recover them. Trump, however, has pleaded not guilty.

This high-stakes legal battle took a dramatic turn when Cannon, appointed by Trump in 2020, rejected recommendations to recuse herself from the case.

The New York Times reported that Southern District of Florida Chief Judge Cecilia Altonaga and another judge advised Cannon to step aside, yet she refused. Cannon's tenure has been marked by several contentious rulings, earning her sharp rebukes from the ultra-conservative 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Critics argue that Cannon is deliberately delaying the case to prevent it from going to trial before the upcoming election, with the trial date currently postponed indefinitely.

Cobb, who served in Trump’s White House, has been vocal about his belief that Cannon is intentionally sabotaging the case. He argues that rather than mere incompetence, Cannon’s actions are a deliberate attempt to aid Trump.

Her decision to hold hearings on the legality of Smith’s appointment as special counsel has only added to the skepticism surrounding her impartiality.

During an appearance on CNN's 'OutFront' with Erin Burnett, Cobb did not mince words while calling out Cannon.

"This all comes down to a request by Trump’s team. They want to get Jack Smith fired, get rid of him as special counsel, say it’s invalid in the Mar-a-Lago case. So, what’s really at stake here?" Burnett questioned.

"Nothing, really, since the law requires that she validate Jack Smith’s appointment and not disqualify him. The jurisprudence on this goes back to 1988 when the Independent Counsel statute, which preceded special counsel appointments, was fully vetted in the Supreme Court and upheld," Cobb asserted.

Cobb lambasted Cannon's decision to entertain a hearing on Smith’s appointment, describing it as "silly." He criticized her for not dismissing the motions without a hearing.

"The fact she doesn’t deny most of these motions without a hearing is silly. The fact that Trump can get a hearing on the flimsiest arguments is shocking," he continued.

Cobb warned that a ruling in Trump’s favor declaring Smith’s appointment illegal would have severe repercussions for Cannon.

"The worst thing that could happen to her is that she actually does rule for Trump on this because that would go to the 11th Circuit and then I think this petty, partisan prima donna would be put in her place and they would remove her," he explained.

Cobb has been one of Cannon’s most relentless critics. Last month, he stated that the judge "is not capable of ruling intelligently" and predicted that she would eventually overstep, leading to her removal by the circuit court.

Ty Cobb's sentiments about Aileen Cannon resonate online

The public reaction to Cobb's sentiments about Cannon was swift and positive, with many echoing his stance.

One user on YouTube remarked, "Judge Cannon is now the 'Karen' in the justice world," while another declared, "This woman is corrupt with a capital C."

Another user commented, "Every time Cannon's name appears in a news story, it should be preceded by 'inexperienced,' 'incompetent,' 'unqualified,' and 'corrupt.'"

"She is obviously corrupt. Any other judge would have had this case in front of a jury months ago," another person wrote.

"The 11th circuit needs to remove Cannon and then impeach her," one user urged.

Another added, "She wanted her fifteen minutes of fame. She got it. She needs to move on."

"Judge Cannon's actions show she is doing Trump favors for appointing her in this position," one person noted.

Others called for immediate change, with one user stating, "Replace Judge Cannon and get a new judge who is impartial and follows the law."
