DUBUQUE, IOWA: A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder for the brutal killing of his mother. He allegedly accused her of practicing witchcraft for years.

According to records, Tyler James Dazey faces charges of first-degree murder and animal abuse causing death. A cash-only bond of $2 million has been set, and he is currently held at the Dubuque County Jail.

Tyler, the defendant, exhibited unusual behavior by laughing during the court appearance. Further details about his mother's murder have emerged during the ongoing investigation.

What happened at Tyler Dazey’s court hearing?

The charges against Tyler are the result of an investigation conducted this week by local investigators.

As per the court document in the case against Tyler Dazey, it was stated that his mother Jennifer Dazey was discovered with multiple lacerations to her head and neck.

Upon hearing Iowa District Associate Judge Mark Hostager's directive, Dazey erupted into laughter. Connecting via video from the Dubuque County Jail, he told Hostager that it was "always a pleasure", before concluding the interaction and leaving, as per Telegraph Herald.

Police arrive at crime scene

Police responded to a distressing scene where Jennifer was discovered dead at her residence on 1600 block of Avoca Street by a friend on Thursday morning, January 18.

The authorities described a gruesome sight as Jennifer Dazey had suffered "numerous" and "significant" lacerations to her face, neck, and head, with two fingers severed.

The family dog was also found dead on the living room sofa, having sustained head injuries.

According to official documents, Tyler Dazey was discovered naked in his bedroom, exhibiting limited responsiveness as per Law&Crime.

A tactical tomahawk was allegedly found in a bathroom, with its sheath on the dining room table.

While the police did not confirm it as the murder weapon, they sent it, along with other evidence, to the state crime lab for further testing.

Following Tyler Dazey's release from the hospital, officers claimed to have spoken to him, during which he reportedly admitted to owning a tomahawk.

The defendant alleged that his mother had been practising "witchcraft" against him for years and on the day of the incident also she was doing witchcraft in bed.

When questioned about his mother's injuries, defendant Tyler invoked his Miranda rights, as per police accounts.
