Tyler Robinson left a letter confessing he had 'opportunity to take out' Charlie Kirk, docs reveal
OREM, UTAH: The alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk told his boyfriend and roommate that he spotted a chance to kill the conservative activist and acted on it, according to newly unsealed court documents released Friday, April 10.
Authorities had already said that Tyler Robinson, accused of fatally shooting Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, sent several messages to his roommate, Lance Twiggs, who is transgender.
But the latest batch of documents added a lot more detail to what prosecutors say happened in the hours before and after the killing.
Tyler Robinson's letter to Lance Twiggs
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the documents show Robinson texted Twiggs (whom he referred to as Luna), urging her to "drop what you are doing" and "look under my keyboard."
Investigators say he had left behind a letter confessing to the shooting and apologizing.
The contents of that letter are now public for the first time.
"If you are reading this per my text, then I am so sorry. I left the house this morning on a mission, and set an auto text," Robinson wrote. "I am likely dead or facing a lengthy prison sentence. I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it. I don't know if I will/have succeeded, but I had hoped to make it home to you. I wish we could have lived in a world where this did not feel necessary. I wish I could have stayed for you and lived our lives together."
The message was reportedly sent shortly after the shooting that left Kirk, 31, dead.
Discord chat and subsequent surrender
The newly unsealed warrants also shed light on an online Discord chat where Robinson allegedly confessed his crime in real time.
In that chat, one user wrote, "Tyler killed Charlie!!!!"
Roughly two hours before his arrest on the night of Sept. 11, Robinson himself allegedly posted, "Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I'm sorry for all of this."
Minutes later, he signaled he was ready to give himself up.
"I'm surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments," he wrote at 7:57 p.m. local time in southern Utah. "Thanks for all the good times and laughs, you've all been so amazing, thank you all for everything."
Rooftop trail and mounting charges
Investigators say the documents also map out Robinson’s movements around the campus, focusing on the rooftop of the Losee Center building directly across from where Kirk’s event was being held.
According to the filings, authorities found a shoe impression on the northeast corner of the roof, matching surveillance footage that allegedly shows Robinson climbing down from the building.
They also recovered potential DNA evidence, including "fingerprints and a smeared palm print in the vicinity of the northeast corner rooftop edge of the Losee Center building, where Robinson dropped off the rooftop to the ground below."
Prosecutors say Robinson later tried to retrieve the rifle he had hidden in nearby bushes.
The Utah County Attorney's Office has charged Robinson with seven counts.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 17, with a preliminary hearing set for May 18–21. Prosecutors are expected to call Twiggs and Robinson’s parents as witnesses as the case moves forward.
