NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A distasteful joke made by Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy about the violent attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation online over the weekend.

The controversial quip came during a segment on 'Jesse Watters Primetime', where Campos-Duffy and co-host Pete Hegseth discussed recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Joe Biden, as reported by Newsweek.

President Biden honored 19 individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a prestigious civilian award, on Friday, May 3. Among the recipients were political figures such as John Kerry, Nancy and James Clyburn.

During the show, Campos-Duffy criticized the selection of recipients, suggesting that individuals like former President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the US Border Patrol should have received the honor instead.

Her co-host, Pete Hegseth, agreed, stating that it is "more likely to go to Paul Pelosi, Susan Rice, and [Democratic California Governor] Gavin Newsom," calling Campos-Duffy's suggestion "off brand for Big Joe."

Afterward, in a shocking moment, Campos-Duffy made an insensitive remark about Paul, who was brutally attacked with a hammer a few years back. "Well maybe Paul Pelosi needs the hammer instead of the medal," she quipped, prompting laughter from Hegseth.

The incident in question occurred in October 2022 when an intruder, David DePape, broke into the San Francisco home of Paul and assaulted him with a hammer.

Nancy was not present during the attack. As a result of the assault, Paul suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull. Subsequently, DePape was convicted on charges of assaulting a federal official's family member and attempting to kidnap a federal official.
