DES MOINES, IOWA: Singer-songwriter Ozzy Osbourne had taken the on-stage antics of heavy metal performers to the next level unknowingly over four decades ago by biting into a bat during his band's performance.

As the lead singer of the legendary band Black Sabbath, Osbourne was performing in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1982 when a fan threw what he felt at that moment to be a fake rubber bat onto the stage. Keeping in character, the singer bit into it to discover in his horror that the bat was as real as it could get.

While the incident took place at a time when social media was a thing of the distant future, it recently went viral again after a YouTuber created a simulation video recreating the infamous scene in great detail.

According to Unilad, a YouTuber known by his channel Zack D Films, created a horrific simulation that showed in great detail what the Black Sabbath singer went through in the moments after biting into a real bat on the concert stage.

The clip runs for 27 seconds and shows a figure representing Osbourne picking up a bat thrown on the stage and biting into it "without hesitation."

However, as his mouth was filled with the bat's blood, Osbourne appeared horrified as he realized his mistake and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Osbourne recently recalled his experience of biting a bat in an interview with Far Out that was published on December 10, 2024. He admittedly did not even consider the possibility that the bat thrown on stage by a fan at his 1982 Des Moines concert could be real.

As soon as he bit into it, the singer realized his mistake, as he said, "Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong."

“For a start, my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you could ever imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin," Osbourne shared.

At the time, the singer feared that the bat was alive when it was thrown and he was the one responsible for its death as he had bitten off its head. However, the person who threw it later confirmed that the animal had already been dead.

Osbourne received rabies jabs at the hospital as a precautionary measure and was able to walk away from the incident with only the trauma of the experience. What he does regret most about it is the fact that the incident might end up defining him in the future.

"It’s not Ozzy Osbourne the man who’s traveled more miles than an astronaut and sold x billion records. It’s all they’re going to remember! When I die it will be Ozzy Osbourne. The bat biter is dead, bats can now live in peace. The bats will go, ‘Fuck me, thank god he’s dead. I was waiting for him to come round our fuckin’ belfry,'" lamented the star.

Internet can't get over Ozzy Osbourne biting into a bat

Viewers still continue to be horrified by the entire incident and the simulation's retelling of the gory event just brought back some wild memories for them as one wrote on YouTube, "His face of terror when he realized..."

Another viewer expressed his surprise after finding out the true story behind the whole thing. "Omg, how many years have I thought the story was that he deliberately bit the head off a bat he just had. That's what happens when you just believe something you hear too quickly," the user said.

Similarly another fan thought the bat was Ozzy's doing as he wrote, "All this time I thought he brought the bat on stage himself."

One questioned why would Osbourne attempt to put something a stranger threw into his mouth in the first place, "Why would you put something someone threw at you in your mouth I would throw it back on them."

One viewer joked, "That bat probably is the most famous bat ever!"

A possible fan praised the singer for his 'dedication' and said, "This guy literally bit into a real bat and continued the show . Now that is dedication."
