WASHINGTON, DC: The Washington Monument turned into America’s tallest birthday candle as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve.

As the calendar flipped to 2026, the nation’s capital welcomed the new year with a large-scale light and projection show on the Washington Monument. The display was commissioned under President Donald Trump’s initiative and marked the official start of the countdown to America’s 250th birthday.

The visual spectacle transformed the iconic landmark into a towering canvas of light, celebrating the country’s history, progress, and future. The event also marked only the second time in the monument’s history that large-scale projections were used on its exterior.

The display officially launched Freedom 250, a national program created to commemorate the semiquincentennial of the United States. Beginning shortly after 7 pm on December 31 and continuing into the early hours of the new year, the projections ran in repeated cycles lasting approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

Washington Monument becomes a moving history book

Each cycle used high-resolution projection mapping to transform the 555-foot obelisk into a vertical storytelling canvas. Organizers structured the experience around five chapters: Discovery, Revolution and Independence, Westward Expansion, The Industrial Revolution and the 20th Century, and Modern Day and the Future of the Nation.

The visuals traced America’s journey from its earliest exploration to modern achievements, presenting a chronological narrative that could be seen from across the National Mall.

As fireworks lit the distant skyline, the monument glowed against the night sky. Near midnight, the projection culminated in a dramatic flame animation at the top of the structure, completing the illusion of a towering birthday candle.

At the stroke of midnight, the light ascended the monument before bursting at the peak, officially marking the arrival of the anniversary year.

Timed to the nation’s New Year countdown

The Washington display was synchronized with nationwide New Year’s Eve broadcasts. While Times Square welcomed 2026 with its iconic ball drop, the capital offered its own symbolic moment as the monument lit up in tribute to the nation’s founding.

Behind the scenes, the production required coordination between technical teams, designers, and historical consultants to ensure both visual precision and historical accuracy.

Trump’s 250th birthday pledge takes shape

Freedom 250 was launched to fulfill President Trump’s pledge to stage a nationwide celebration worthy of the country’s 250th anniversary, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, called the moment historic. “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for our country, and the Washington Monument is being lit as the world’s tallest birthday candle,” he said. Krach added that President Trump had promised a celebration that honored the nation’s history, values, and future.

Completed in 1884, the Washington Monument has long stood as a symbol of unity and endurance. Organizers selected it as the centerpiece of the kickoff due to its scale, visibility, and historical significance digital mapping software capable of projecting crisp imagery onto the monument’s stone surface.

The event also built on past milestone celebrations, including the bicentennial in 1976, but incorporated modern technology such as synchronized lighting, lasers, and advanced digital projection systems capable of illuminating the monument’s stone surface with striking clarity.
