Two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler clinched gold and set an Olympic record for 72 holes at 19-under 265 in the men's golf competition

PARIS, FRANCE: World No 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was overwhelmed with emotion after winning the gold medal in men's individual stroke play at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, August 4.

Great Britain's Tommy Fleetwood finished second to get the silver while Japan's Hideki Matsuyama received the bronze, as reported by Golf.com.



 

This was the first Olympic medal for all three.

Team USA's Scottie Scheffler feels proud to win gold for the 'best country in the world'

Following the historic win, Scottie Scheffler said, "It’s pretty high up there. Anytime you’re able to represent your country is pretty special. This was a fun week and it was great representing the USA, and I’m proud to be going home with a medal."

He also explained his strategy, noting, "I was trying to stay aggressive, and I was doing my best to stay patient and wait for my putter to get hot. I hit some really nice shots on the back nine and hit some nice putts."

"And really I was just trying to do anything I could do make some birdies, and I was fortunate to be able to get it done," added the 28-year-old.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he shared, "Bringing home the gold for the best country in the world."

2024 is Scottie Scheffler's year

Before bagging gold in the Olympics, Scottie Scheffler won his second Masters championship earlier this year. He also emerged victorious in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship as well as won four other PGA Tour events.

Moreover, the golf star and his wife, Meredith Scudder, welcomed their first child in May.

Internet hails Scottie Scheffler as he wins gold 

Team USA supporters were elated with Scottie Scheffler's Paris Olympic victory, with many praising his gameplay. 

One wrote, 'You literally cannot put a price on this 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸," and another said, "The Olympics really plant your feet in the ground and make you realize where you’re really at. What a day for Scheffler."

"Scottie needs to be in serious consideration for closing ceremony flag bearer," recommended a person. Someone else shared, "My girlfriend was like, ‘are you CRYING....?’ Because I was actually choked up before he broke down...and then when he did...I was done…"

"Congrats Scottie!! You make us proud of you and our country! 🇺🇸 💪," expressed one more, while another person stated, "Scottie Scheffler what a guy, has completely elevated his game in the last 2/3 years. Well played sir 👏🏻🏌️‍♂️."
