LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Justin Timberlake has sparked outrage among Britney Spears fans after he made a defiant statement on stage before performing his song 'Cry Me a River' which is widely believed to be about his split from the pop star.

The singer, who celebrated his 43rd birthday with a free concert in New York City on Wednesday, January 31, said he wanted to “apologize to absolutely f*****g nobody” as he addressed the crowd in a widely circulated video online.

Justin Timberlake’s no apology is seen as a jab at Britney Spears following her apology

Many fans interpreted Timberlake’s remark as a dig at Spears, who recently apologized for some of the things she wrote in her 2023 memoir 'The Woman in Me.'

In the book, Spears revealed that she had an abortion during her three-year relationship with Timberlake because he “definitely wasn’t happy” that she was pregnant.

She also expressed her admiration recently in an Instagram post for Timberlake’s new single 'Selfish' which is his first release in nearly six years.

“I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book,” Spears captioned an Instagram post, on Sunday, January 28. “If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about, I am deeply sorry,” she wrote.

She added, “I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish’.It is soo good and how come every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so hard???.”

Justin Timberlake announces new album and tour

Timberlake’s controversial statement came as he announced his plans for a new album and a North American tour, as well as releasing his first single in nearly six years 'Selfish.'

The singer, who has not released a full-length album since 2018’s 'Man of the Woods' has been working on new music and that he would be hitting the road soon.

He also performed his new single 'Selfish' which is an R&B-infused ballad that showcases his falsetto vocals.

Timberlake performed a free, one-night-only concert on Wednesday, January 31, at Irving Plaza in New York City to mark his 43rd birthday, according to the Independent.

The clip which has now gone viral has reportedly been captured from this venue.

On Wednesday, January 31, Billboard reported that Spears’s 'Selfish' topped Timberlake’s in sales during its first full week, thanks to the fan movement.

Timberlake will release his sixth studio album 'Everything I Thought It Was' on 15 March.
