WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden's comments on Donald Trump's inability to recall his wife Melania Trump's name during the CPAC event have sparked a strong reaction from the former President.

Appearing on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' on the February 26 episode, Biden took a swipe at the ex-president's age and memory while responding to questions about his own attempts to address concerns about his age amid the re-election bid.

"Well, a couple of things," the President replied. "Number one, you gotta take a look at the other guy. He's about as old as I am, but he can't remember his wife's name."

Biden was referring to the February 24 Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington DC, when Trump mistakenly called his wife Melania "Mercedes" while praising her.

Based on a report by The Independent, the GOP forerunner described how "people love her" receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. "Oh look at that Mercedes, that's pretty good," Trump blundered.

Donald Trump's fierce response to Biden's mockery

The former President took to his Truth Social platform, arguing that he made no mistakes.

"He went on a very poorly rated show last night, and he talked about Donald Trump and his wife. I don't know the name of my wife. He was referring to the fact that at CPAC, where I had a sold-out speech, the biggest audience they've had in years, I think maybe ever, I made the statement that Melania was very popular because what I mentioned her name, the audience went wild," Trump said.

The presidential candidate then clarified, recalling that he had been observing Matt Schlapp, the chair of the American Conservative Union, and his wife, Mercedes Schlapp, and remarked, "they really like the First Lady."

"So this got taken as the fact that I thought Mercedes was the First Lady. It has nothing to do with that," he added.

Trump then went into a tirade slamming Biden and his supporters, labeling them "really dishonest" and "absolutely nothing."

"They have a horrible candidate who's a horrible president. They make up things constantly," he said.

To support his assertion, Trump further explained that he frequently "mentions" former President Barack Obama and Biden for "humorous purposes" and "sarcasm," implying that Obama is effectively leading the country while Biden is sleeping.

Trump has a reputation for frequently mixing up his opponent's name and later claiming he did it intentionally.

For instance, he recently said that he purposely mixed up his presidential opponent Nikki Haley's name with former Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a campaign speech where he accused the former of being in charge of Capitol security on January 6, 2021.

Internet ridicules Donald Trump

Netizens had a gala time mocking the former President for unnecessarily explaining his blunder and suggested the clip would get more views now.

One user wrote, "Haha trigger much. What a loser."

"Dude's got a lot on his mind," another person remarked. A user added, "Hahaha. I love it. Trump just cannot keep his mouth shut. More people will watch the Mercedes [sic] clip because he is talking about it."

One more response read, "He’s more annoyed, disgruntled, and grumpy than usual. Didn’t think that was possible."

"Lol wow, when ya have to explain yourself to that depth, you've already lost the argument," said another individual.

While a person sarcastically stated, "Maybe he should write her name on his hand next time!"
