Whoopi Goldberg lauded as she launches global women's sports channel and achieves her 16-year-old dream
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whoopi Goldberg is on a mission to transform how we view women’s sports, and she’s taking a big step toward that goal with the launch of a new global sports channel dedicated entirely to women.
On the November 6 episode of 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', Goldberg announced her exciting new project: the All Women's Sports Network (AWSN).
Whoopi Goldberg launches All Women’s Sports Network to boost visibility for female athletes
“I’m launching the first global women’s sports channel called AWSN,” Whoopi Goldberg said and added, “It’ll be the home for live women’s sports from around the world.”
The channel will provide coverage of women’s sports, bringing greater visibility and recognition to female athletes at the global level.
AWSN is already making strides with its global reach, having already launched in regions including Asia, the Middle East, and India, in partnership with JioTV.
The channel is growing rapidly, with a significant announcement about its US launch coming soon. Goldberg also praised her channel’s partner, CommonSpirit, for its commitment to promoting women’s health, further underscoring her vision of empowering women through sports.
Throughout her life, Goldberg has long felt passionate about sports, even though her love for athletics wasn’t always encouraged when she was younger. “Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to play sports. My brother could play... but they would say, ‘Oh, hi little girl',” she recalled, mimicking the dismissive tone she often faced as a girl trying to get involved in sports.
Whoopi Goldberg’s vision for AWSN
This early experience inspired Whoopi Goldberg to dream of a world where women’s sports received the same level of recognition and respect as men’s. She explained, “For years, I’ve been talking to people and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could go around the world, start getting young athletes in high school so that we can grow with them and grow up with them?’”
Goldberg’s vision for AWSN includes creating a deeper connection with fans, something she believes has been lacking in the relationship between the public and women’s sports. “I feel like that will help us show that athletics, when they’re done brilliantly, it doesn’t matter who’s doing it,” Goldberg said. “We don’t really have that relationship with women’s sports.”
Her plan also includes bringing back a nostalgic tradition from earlier sports culture: athlete trading cards. “I envision these athletes getting their own playing cards, like baseball and basketball players used to have back in the day,” Goldberg said. It’s a way to celebrate these athletes and make their achievements as iconic as those of their male counterparts.
Goldberg’s dream of a dedicated women’s sports network has been 16 years in the making. Now, with AWSN, her vision is becoming a reality. As she continues to champion women in sports, Goldberg’s efforts aim to ensure that future generations of young female athletes will have the recognition and opportunities they deserve.
