NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Whoopi Goldberg recently appeared as a guest on 'Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?', where she discussed her experience co-hosting ABC’s 'The View' for the past 17 years.

When CNN host Chris Wallace asked the EGOT winner about her current feelings toward hosting the program, she admitted her job was more enjoyable in the past when people didn't immediately weaponize everything she said.

What did Whoopi Goldberg say about hosting 'The View' in the past?

Goldberg took on the role of moderator and co-host of 'The View' on September 4, 2007, succeeding Rosie O'Donnell. She currently hosts the show alongside Joy Behar, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, and Ana Navarro.

"I liked it better before because there was not … people didn’t didn’t assume that you were starting out to be nasty or horrible or saying stuff," noted Goldberg about the earlier times.

Whoopi Goldberg says now she is always hedging her comments

She added, "You used to say something and somebody would say, 'Well, actually, that’s not so.' And you could make that adjustment. Or you could say, 'Well, here’s what … this is why I thought about it this way.' You can’t do that anymore."

"Nobody wants to hear what you were thinking. They’re only saying that’s what you said. And that must mean that your whole life is that. It’s like wow. I feel like now you’re always having to hedge what you say because you don’t want to p*** people off," expressed Goldberg, as per Variety.

When asked by Wallace if there's anything currently bothering her that she'd like to discuss, Goldberg responded, "Yeah, but if I say it, it's only going to be a problem... only be a problem for you."

Goldberg pointed out she felt there was more meaningful debate during the show's heyday and one could discuss things more openly rather than fear people's assumptions about what one was saying. Nowadays, she feels people nitpick language rather than understand the intent behind the host's words.

She mentioned feeling like she's always hedging her comments instead of expressing her true feelings because she's wary of upsetting people, according to TMZ

Whoopi Goldberg has apologized multiple times for  problematic comments on ‘The View’

Goldberg faced significant backlash in 2022 after being temporarily suspended from 'The View' for her comments on the Holocaust during a live episode, where she said it was "not about race."

In a subsequent interview with The Sunday Times, she sparked controversy once more by stating that some Jewish people themselves are divided over their identity as either a race or a religion. She also reiterated her view that the Holocaust "wasn’t originally" about race.

Goldberg then eventually issued an apology, saying, "I’m still learning a lot, and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt, and angered people."

She added, "My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not. In this time of rising antisemitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I always stood with the Jewish people and always will. My support for them has not wavered and never will."

Internet slams Whoopi Goldberg over her remarks on hosting 'The View'

In the interview, Goldberg appeared to suggest that 'The View' may now prioritize political correctness over fostering open debate. Netizens quickly pointed out that she and her co-hosts might have been the reason behind turning the show "woke."

One expressed, "She is the wokest of all!" and another shared, "She and her cohorts pushed the agenda; they just didn’t think it would backfire on them."

A person pointed out, "She's part of the problem," while someone else echoed, "I wish the elite will stop redefining woke into a one size fits all of things they disagree with. The original meaning of woke has been thwarted so bad it doesn’t even have its original meaning anymore."

"The View is literally unwatchable," declared one more.

Another comment read, "I don't like the view but I don't think people are using the word woke right. Woke is being aware and active about injustices. People seem to just be using woke as a word to explain anything they don't agree with."

"I like Whoopi better as an actress," explained an individual.
