Whoopi Goldberg and recreational drug use

Whoopi Goldberg also grappled with the prevalence of "recreational drug use" in the '80s, which became commonplace in Hollywood hotspots and New York party scenes, as reported by TMZ.

"I was invited to parties where I was greeted at the door with a bowl of Quaaludes from which I could pick what I wanted," Goldberg mentioned.

"Lines of cocaine were laid across tables and bathroom counters for the taking."

The star of 'Made in America' disclosed feeling "very relaxed" during parties, as there was a perception that law enforcement was unlikely to raid the homes of "big-time producers or actors" during that era.

Whoopi Goldberg believed she could handle drugs and often indulged in heavy doses of cocaine, which didn't seem "too dangerous" to her at the time.

It wasn’t until she realized that cocaine started to "kick [her] a*s,” she shared. "So I didn’t move out of bed for twenty-four hours," the Oscar-winner remembered.

"That kind of s**t doesn't end pretty. There's only so long a person can hold their bladder."

Goldberg ultimately made some tough decisions and resolved to quit. "I knew I'd have to change out my friends and turn down invitations but I could do that. I didn't want to die," she wrote.

The memoir "Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me" will be available on 7 May 2024.
