LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whoopi Goldberg shared her perspective on staying friendly with her exes during a recent episode of 'The View'.

The discussion arose around National Text Your Ex Day, prompting co-hosts to debate the appropriateness of maintaining contact with former partners on the October 30, Wednesday episode of the show.

'The View' co-host Whoopi Goldberg says she keeps in touch with her exes

Whoopi Goldberg started off saying, “I’m in touch with all of my exes."

“I'm in touch with every one of them, because once they were my friends. It doesn’t mean that we talk all the time, but I will be respectful enough for you,” she added.

She believes it’s possible to be friendly without the romantic obligations of a relationship, noting, “There’s nobody that I've lived with or messed with that I absolutely hate.”

Goldberg has been married three times. Her first marriage was to Alvin Martin, which ended in divorce in 1979, and they share a daughter named Alexandrea. In 1986, she married cinematographer David Claessen, but that marriage lasted only two years. Her third marriage was to Lyle Trachtenberg, which ended in 1995 after just one year.

Whoopi Goldberg reflects on independence and relationships

Whoopi Goldberg had previously discussed her views on relationships and marriage.

In a 2016 interview with The New York Times, she expressed her preference for independence. “I’m much happier on my own,” she said, explaining her contentment with solitude and lack of interest in permanent partnerships.

“I don’t want somebody in my house.”

Goldberg further elaborated on her personal philosophy in another interview on 'The Don Lemon Show', saying, “I am fundamentally a selfish person... I have a wonderful kid and a son-in-law and three grandkids and one great-grand[kid], that I don’t have time for a whole lot of other people coming into my life.”

In a revealing 2011 interview with Piers Morgan, Goldberg sparked controversy by admitting that she was never in love with any of her three ex-husbands. She explained that her attempts at marriage stemmed from a desire to feel “normal.”

She believed that getting married would create an appearance of normalcy, but ultimately realized that wasn’t true.

“That’s clearly not a good reason to get married,” she stated. “You have to truly want to share a life with someone through all the ups and downs, and I just discovered that wasn’t for me.”
