In her latest memoir, 'Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me,' Whoopi Goldberg shares intimate details about her daughter's teenage pregnancy and the complexities of their relationship.

Goldberg, an Oscar-nominated actress, became a grandmother in her 30s when her daughter Alex became pregnant at a young age.

Reflecting on her initial shock upon hearing the news, Goldberg expresses concerns about her daughter Alex missing out on typical teenage experiences if she became a young mother herself.

"Years later, Alexandrea told me that she thinks she got pregnant as a teenager because she wanted one person in her life who didn't know who Whoopi Goldberg was," she wrote.

"I thought she was getting revenge on me for being gone so much. I got it."

Whoopi admits in her book that she was frequently absent as her career flourished and she landed more acting roles. She explains how she came to realize that her daughter, Alex, would harbor resentment towards her for not being present as much as she should have been. However, Whoopi was driven by the goal of creating a better life for them both.

Whoopi recalls her daughter feeling "p***ed off" when people would shove her aside to meet her or interrupt their dinners for a photo.

Though Whoopi stayed in touch daily while she was filming, she relied on her mother, Emma Harris, to care for Alex. Emma was present by Alex's side when she gave birth to her first child, Amara, on November 13, 1989.

In time, Alex forgave Whoopi, and they now maintain a strong bond. Since then, Whoopi has had two more children, Mason and Jerzey.

In March 2014, Whoopi welcomed her great-granddaughter, Charli Rose, when Amarah gave birth. Whoopi had Alex with her first husband, Alvin Martin, who had served as her drug counselor during her teenage years when she grappled with heroin addiction in New York.

Reflecting on her past, Whoopi shared, "I was young, homeless, and addicted to heroin. I dropped out of high school and into drugs. Simple as that."

She described her drug use as part of the '60s culture and a rite of passage. However, she eventually got clean and pursued her passion for acting.

Goldberg's addiction took a toll on her performance, leading to a decline on set. One particularly chilling moment occurred in a Manhattan hotel room, where Goldberg was caught using cocaine by a startled maid.
