In a 2015 interview with ESPN, Brittney candidly discussed her body and the criticism she has faced.

While referring to her photos in ESPN's Body Issue, Brittney claimed, "I’m sure people are going to have a lot of critical things to say. Yo, she's a man! But hey, that's my body and I look the way I look. People are either going to accept me for who I am or they're not. I don't know what people think I'm hiding.”

"I've heard, oh, she's not a female, she's a male. I've been told, oh, she's tucking stuff. They thought I was tucking. I mean, [in the Body Issue] it's out there. Let me show that I embrace the flatness! I just want people to see somebody who embraces being naked, embraces everything about them being different."

Brittney also shared that growing up, she was often mistaken for a boy and even forced out of women's bathrooms, as per DailyMail.

"I got called a boy all the time," she said. "Going into the bathroom, I still get the shocked look, like, are you supposed to be in here? But I’m so used to it now, I just say, I’m a girl, I’m in the right bathroom."

"In China, it happens all the time! One time when I went into the bathroom there, a lady was so shocked that she was pushing me out; she was so hysterically shocked that I was in there. I couldn't do anything but laugh."

Brittney added that she doesn't like labels and feels both feminine and masculine, though she was forced to choose one as a child.

Brittney Griner's name choice sparks discussion online

Brittney Griner’s preference for what she wants her son to call her has sparked a flurry of reactions online. While some have expressed support for her choice, others have disagreed, labeling it as 'weird.'

One user slammed, "I am sick of hearing about this person. Live your life. She does not deserve any admiration. I wish her child good luck."

Another user wrote, "It’s her choice, this isn’t anyone business but there. It will be a beautiful baby with a truly loving family. All children need is love."

A third claimed, "Such a weirdo. That poor kid." Another user added, "POPS...LOL! That poor child has no hope."

A fifth shared, "Congratulations to the beautiful couple! Also to the haters, the only confusion is your own narrow mindedness. Kids don’t care the title of their parents, they just need and want unconditional love and support. My partner and I of 25 years this September, raised our daughter who starts at Duke University in the Fall just fine. The only struggles we ever faced were those imposed by the hateful opinions of others. We got through them, becoming much stronger individuals in the process. As will this lovely family. All the best to you, Mom and Pops! <3"

A last user said, "Live and let live!!!! Best wishes to this new family."
