'You can't dismiss my lived experience!' Sunny Hostin snaps at Alyssa Farah Griffin as they discuss racism
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Sunny Hostin got into an argument with her co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, and shared a terrible personal experience on the February 1 episode of 'The View.'
The incident took place as they were sitting with fellow co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, and Joy Behar around the Hot Topics table, sharing their opinions on GOP Presidential candidate Nikki Haley's comments alleging that former President Barack Obama had caused a racial divide in America.
Why did Sunny Hostin slam Alyssa Farah Griffin?
Taking part in the ongoing discussion, Griffin began, "I don't agree with where Nikki Haley is on race. I'm much closer to where Joe Biden is in 2021."
"I don't think the American people are racist, I think there's a history of racism. Or Vice President Harris saying, 'No, I don't believe that America is racist but there's a history and we are still living with racism that we have to deal with.' It is not the vast majority of people in this country."
"The FBI director said White supremacy is the biggest threat to our country today," Hostin retorted.
"That still doesn't mean that's the vast majority of people," said Griffin, adding, "I just don't believe that in day-to-day life, the people that you're encountering harbor racist viewpoints..."
At this point, she was cut off again by Hostin, who stated, "If you looked like me, you would believe differently," prompting a round of applause from the audience.
Sunny Hostin's experience with prevailing racism
As Griffin implored Hostin to help her understand her perception, the latter said, "I think there is a significant portion that are racist and you can't dismiss my lived experience." Griffin immediately replied that she "never would."
"When I say that there are a lot of racists in this country, I just experienced my son, walking down the beach, being called the N-word several times in Florida," continued Hostin. "So you can't say, 'I believe that the vast majority of people aren't racist.' We don't know that."
Hostin shares son Gabriel, 21, and daughter Paloma, 17, with husband Emmanuel Hostin, according to People.
"There are 300 million people in this country. I would never minimize your lived experience, any more than I would mine as an Arab woman," Griffin told Hostin in the end.
