Universal Music's statement on Trump campaign's unauthorized use of songs

In a statement issued by Universal Music, the record label stated, “Together with the members of ABBA, we have discovered that videos have been released where ABBA’s music has been used at Trump events, and we have therefore requested that such use be immediately removed and taken down."

"Universal Music Publishing AB and Polar Music International AB have not received any request, so no permission or license has been granted to Trump," it added, reported Reuters.

According to Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, Trump campaign played ABBA hits including ‘The Winner Takes It All’ and ‘Money, Money, Money’ at a Minnesota rally on July 27.

Growing lists of artists oppose Trump campaign's use of music

On Friday, August 23, the Foo Fighters took to social media to reveal that they did not give permission for their song 'My Hero' to be played at Trump's rally in Phoenix, Arizona, while welcoming Robert F Kennedy Jr.

Sony Music Entertainment Canada, representing Celine Dion, issued a statement earlier this month, condemning the use of her performance of 'My Heart Will Go On' at a Trump rally in Montana.

The record label clarified that "in no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use.”

The family of late singer Isaac Hayes took legal action against the Trump campaign “for 134 counts of copyright infringement for the unauthorized use of the song ‘Hold On I’m Coming’ at campaign rallies from 2022-2024.”

Other artists and bands, including The Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr, Adele, Queen, Sinead O'Connor’s estate, The White Stripes, Elton John and The Beatles have also publicly opposed the use of their music at Trump's campaign events.

Internet doubles down on ABBA demanding Trump campaign to stop using their music

As ABBA has publicly demanded Trump campaign to stop playing their songs at the Republican presidential nominee's rallies, netizens expressed their opinion on the band's decision.

One user on X wrote, "Good on ABBA for standing up for their music! Artists should have control over how their work is used." Another tweeted, "ABBA said, "No thank you for the music, Mr Trump!"

"The lists of artists saying he can’t use their music is hilarious," a netizen opined. Another wrote, "Why doesn’t he ask permission/ clearance before feeling entitled to use anyone’s music?"

"Is he ever going to learn that nobody, almost nobody, wants their music associated with him!?" an individual penned. Someone remarked, "His team is so incompetent and reek of entitlement. They can’t even be bothered to get permission to use songs."
