LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Adrien Brody didn’t just take home his second Academy Award, he made history.

Beating out Timothee Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Colman Domingo, and Ralph Fiennes, Brody won for his portrayal of Hungarian-Jewish architect Laszlo Toth in 'The Brutalist'. But before he even spoke, he made headlines casually spitting out his chewing gum and tossing it to his partner, Georgina Chapman.

When the orchestra began playing to cut him off, Brody wasn’t having it. “Turn the music off! I’ve done this before,” he said, waving them down, adding, “It’s not my first rodeo, but I will be brief.”

Brody broke a long-standing record, surpassing Greer Garson’s infamous five-minute, 30-second acceptance speech from 1943 when she won for 'Mrs. Miniver', a moment which prompted the Academy to enforce a strict time limit of forty-five seconds for future speeches.

“I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and repercussions of war, systematic oppression, antisemitism, and racism,” he added. “I pray for a healthier, happier, and more inclusive world. If the past can teach us anything, it’s a reminder to not let hate go unchecked,” Brody stated.

Reflecting on his profession, he described acting as “a very fragile profession” and said, “It looks very glamorous, and certain moments it is, but the one thing I’ve gained, having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective and no matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away, and I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude that I have to still to do the work that I love."

“OK, I’ll get out of here, I love you, I appreciate you all,” he said wrapping up his monologue, Brody left the stage with a call to action, “Let’s fight for what’s right, keep smiling, keep loving one another, let’s rebuild together. Thank you.”

Speaking to 'GMA' the next morning, Brody joked about his lengthy speech, “It’s a pretty long movie so I had to have a little bit extra time to say what’s relevant,” he said. “It’s been a very long time between speeches,” he observed.

While 'The Brutalist' took home awards for Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, it was 'Anora' that dominated the night, winning five Oscars, including Best Picture. Mikey Madison took home Best Actress, while Sean Baker made history with four wins, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture.
