‘All talk, no walk’: Expert mocks Hollywood celebs who vowed to leave US if Trump won
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In the months preceding the 2024 presidential election, numerous celebrities had openly expressed their views on Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Now that Trump has won the 2024 presidential race against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the spotlight is on the celebrities who had boldly claimed that they would leave the US if Trump got reelected.
Celebrities threaten to leave US if Donald Trump returns to White House
While some celebrities had backed Donald Trump, others, such as Sharon Stone, Cher, and Barbra Streisand, have voiced their disapproval and even threatened to leave the US if Trump got reelected.
"I am certainly considering a house in Italy," Sharon Stone had told the Daily Mail in July.
"I think that’s an intelligent construct at this time. This is one of the first times in my life that I’ve actually seen anyone running for office on a platform of hate and oppression," she added.
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Cher stated, "I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country]."
On the other hand, Barbra Streisand informed host Stephen Colbert that she could not "live in this country if he becomes president", and conceded she would likely relocate to England.
The concept of celebrities leaving the country following an election isn't new, according to Doug Eldridge, the founder of Achilles PR.
"Every four years, you hear the same recycled rhetoric from celebrities. It's become a running joke at this point. It's all talk, no walk," Eldridge said to Fox News Digital.
Celebrities who pledged to leave US if Donald Trump won 2016 elections
In 2016, celebrities including Whoopi Goldberg, Miley Cyrus, Amy Schumer, Cher, and George Lopez, among others, pledged to relocate if Donald Trump got elected president.
During Trump's initial campaign, Cyrus expressed her thoughts through Instagram, "My heart is broken into a 100000 pieces…I am moving if [Donald Trump] is my president! I don't say things I don't mean!"
She later deleted the post. She subsequently shared a heartfelt video on social media, acknowledging Trump's presidency and appealing to him "treat people with love".
Schumer stated on BBC's 'Newsnight' the same year, "My act will change because I will need to learn to speak Spanish because I will move to Spain or somewhere. It’s beyond my comprehension if Trump won. It’s just too crazy."
She later clarified that her comments were made in jest while expressing her disappointment with the 2016 election results on Instagram.
While it remains uncertain whether Streisand, Cher, and Stone truly intend to leave the country now that Trump was won the 2024 election, Eldridge suggests that their departure would likely have little impact on their success.
Celebrities react to Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory
Meanwhile, celebrities took to social media on Wednesday, November 6, to share their reactions to Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
"Please unfollow me if you voted against female rights," Christina Applegate expressed her thoughts on X.
"Against disability rights. Yeah that. Unfollow me because what you did is unreal. Don’t want followers like this. So yeah. Done. Also after today I will be shutting down this fan account that I have had for so many years because this is sick," she added.

Mandy Moore expressed her sentiments in her Instagram stories, stating, "Shout out to all of us processing our grief, disbelief, anger, fear, uncertainty, devastation while simultaneously carrying on with life and putting on a brave face for our families…I see you. Let's be tender with ourselves and one another."
Hulk Hogan, known for his support of Trump, stated, "Believe it or not, brother, we’re more alike than we are different. This election season showed just how much we all care about where this country’s headed."
He added, "Now that the votes are in, let’s remember—it doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican, we’re all real Americans. It’s time to come together, talk with our neighbors and focus on what unites us. We all love this country, and we’re all in for building a better future. Love you all. HH."
