In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie opened up about her past while sharing her experiences of preparing for the role of opera star Maria Callas, whom she plays in the biopic, ‘Maria’.

The 49-year-old actress revealed in the interview that portraying Maria Callas in the film that received an eight-minute-long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, was a surreal experience as she is not a singer herself.

“It was an out-of-body experience because I don’t sing,” Jolie shared, before revealing, “I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing.”

She explained without naming the person, “It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing.”

Jolie sounded incredulous while saying that she was surprised that she let that criticism break her confidence.

“I’d been to theater school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me,” Jolie observed before explaining, “I just kind of adapted to this person’s opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing.”

Thus, it took her considerable time and effort to step into the process of “learning to sing and to enjoy singing” as it didn’t come easily.

She shared with the outlet, “I was very, very shy stepping through this whole process.”

However, as the actress was venturing out for her new beginning, her children were there for her.

Jolie revealed, “My boys [sons Maddox and Pax] were there, but there was hardly anybody in there because the thing with singing opera is, you have to be loud.”

The ‘Maleficent’ actress elaborated on her grueling training and said, “God knows how many lozenges I had, and I was rehearsing all night, all morning,” and admitted, “I was very nervous to begin. I didn’t want to disappoint the crew.”

Angelina Jolie’s relationships timeline

The glamorous actress, who did not share the name of her partner who criticized her voice, has had a string of high-profile relationships throughout her career.

One of her first public relationships was with her ‘Hackers’ co-star Jonny Lee Miller. After meeting in 1995, the former couple tied the knot in 1996.

However, they got divorced in 1999 owing to their busy schedules and demanding careers. They have, since then, maintained a cordial relationship.

Following her break up with the ‘Elementary’ actor, Jolie married actor Billy Bob Thornton in 2000 when she was filming ‘Pushing Tin’.

In 2003, the then-couple announced their separation and have maintained mutual respect even after the divorce.

After two failed marriages, Jolie entered into a high-profile relationship with Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt in 2005. Together, they welcomed six children - Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 16.

The couple got married in 2014, and Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt following a fateful flight from France to the USA in 2016, citing physical abuse as one of the causes.

Following a contentious court battle, the divorce was granted in 2019, but the feuding pair continue to lock horns in the court because of their ownership of Chateau Miraval.

In 2021, Jolie fueled romance rumors with singer The Weeknd when they were spotted dining together. They, however, neither denied nor confirmed the relationship rumors.
