Angelina Jolie triggers Brad Pitt fans after she hints at emotional toll of her divorce
VENICE, ITALY: Angelina Jolie has candidly shared the deep emotional impact of her divorce from Brad Pitt, describing it as a period marked by intense despair and pain.
While promoting her role as Maria Callas in 'Maria', Jolie reflected on her musical evolution and the personal connection she feels to Callas’s vulnerability.
Amid ongoing legal battles, Jolie's return to the spotlight comes as she navigates both professional triumphs and personal challenges.
Angelina Jolie relates to Maria Callas’s role through shared experiences of abandonment
Angelina Jolie recently opened up about the emotional toll of her divorce from Brad Pitt, describing it as a period of "despair" and "pain." Jolie, 49, and Pitt separated after a contentious incident on a plane in 2016.
In court documents, Jolie has alleged that Pitt assaulted her and some of their six children and that he poured wine and beer on the family in a fit of rage. Pitt has consistently denied these accusations.
At the Venice Film Festival, where Jolie is promoting her film Maria, in which she stars as opera singer Maria Callas, she reflected on her interest in music. She mentioned her early love for punk music, especially 'The Clash', and her shift towards classical music and opera as she aged.
She explained that the depth of despair and pain she has experienced makes the intense emotions of opera particularly resonant for her, "But I think when you have felt a certain level of despair, of pain, of love at a certain point there are only certain sounds that can match that feeling and to me the immensity of the feeling encapsulated in the sounds of opera - there is nothing like it."
She added, "That feeling that would move all of us if we were to hear it would be the only sound that would explain that pain, so I have leaned more towards it now."
Jolie also discussed her return to filmmaking after a hiatus spent focusing on her family. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in the creative world and mentioned that her film 'Without Blood', which she co-produced, will be released next week at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Jolie trained for seven months to sing for her role as Callas, performing at a time in the singer’s life when she was close to death and losing her voice. She claimed, "My first time singing I was so nervous that my sons were there and they helped to block the door so that nobody else was coming in."
Producers blended Jolie’s voice with that of Callas. Jolie admitted to being nervous about singing and appreciated director Pablo Larrain’s patience and guidance throughout the process, as per Daily Mail.
"And I was shaky. Pablo in his decency started me in a small room and ended me in La Scala. So he gave me a time to grow. I was frightened to live up to her and you know I had not sung in public."
Reflecting on Callas’s life, Jolie hoped the late opera legend knew how loved she was. Callas, renowned as one of the greatest opera voices, died at 53 in 1977 after a period of ill health and isolation, compounded by personal heartbreak from her abandonment by her husband Ari Onassis.
Jolie also noted her personal connection to Callas's vulnerability, sharing that she relates to the emotional openness and softness Callas displayed.
Meanwhile, the legal battle between Jolie and Pitt continues, including disputes over finances and custody.
Their daughter Shiloh recently sought to drop "Pitt" from her surname, highlighting ongoing family tensions. Jolie and Pitt are expected to avoid each other at the Venice Film Festival, with Jolie leaving after her Thursday night premiere of 'Maria' and Pitt arriving for his Sunday night premiere of 'Wolfs' with George Clooney.
