Anthony Head, face of two TV generations from ‘Buffy’ to ‘Ted Lasso,’ dies at 72
LONDON, ENGLAND: Celebrated British actor Anthony Head, who achieved global fame across distinct eras of television as a beloved mentor and a streaming-era corporate villain, has died at the age of 72.
His talent agency, Gordon & French, confirmed the performer's passing on Friday, June 5.
The loss marks the departure of an extraordinarily versatile actor who successfully reinvented his public profile for entirely new generations of television viewers.
The actor passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family.
In an official statement, his daughters, Daisy and Emily Head, revealed that their father's death was caused by sudden complications stemming from pneumonia.
The family expressed immense pride in his enduring career, noting that while their grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, his artistic legacy will permanently live on in the classic shows he championed and through the global audiences that continue to love them.
Cult classic brought him international fame
Head initially rose to prominence across England during the 1980s before achieving international stardom in the late 1990s with his career-defining leading role on the supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Regarded as a cornerstone of the cult classic, he captured audiences as the intellectual librarian and trusted mentor, Rupert Giles.
Known for his deep baritone voice, Head became a staple of premium television, securing prominent guest roles on the British classic Doctor Who.
His theatrical work extended into critically acclaimed cinema as well, including appearances in the biographical drama The Iron Lady alongside Meryl Streep and the 2024 feature film Upgraded.
His passing follows the recent losses of Buffy co-stars Nicholas Brendon, who died in March at age 54, and Michelle Trachtenberg, who passed in February 2025.
Streaming hits mark final triumphs
In recent years, Head introduced his talents to an entirely new demographic of viewers by transitioning into the streaming era on Apple TV’s blockbuster comedy-drama Ted Lasso.
Throughout the show's first three seasons, he masterfully portrayed the villainous football team owner Rupert Mannion.
Though fans noticed Head did not appear in a recent teaser trailer produced for the show's upcoming fourth season, his antagonistic performance remained a central pillar of the narrative.
Throughout his lifelong career in England, Head considered himself incredibly lucky to do what he loved.
He shared his life with his daughters and his longtime partner, Sarah Fisher, an animal welfare advocate who passed away in December.
