Armie Hammer denies Robert Downey Jr paid for his rehab, reveals key advice he gave instead
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Armie Hammer is setting records straight about his 2021 rehab stint and Robert Downey Jr’s supposed role in it.
The 37-year-old actor, who faced allegations of sexual assault engaging in cannibalism fantasies, spent nearly six months in rehab for sex, drug, and alcohol issues.
On Friday, July 19, Hammer joined Piers Morgan for an interview where he opened up about his experiences in the Florida facility.
Armie Hammer denies Robert Downey Jr paid for his rehab stay
A few months after one of Armie Hammer’s ex-girlfriends accused him of violent rape and abuse, the actor checked himself into a rehab center in Florida in June 2021.
A year later, it was alleged that the Marvel superstar Robert Downey Jr - who himself has dealt with substance abuse addiction - was financially helping the 'Call Me By Your Name' star with his treatment, as per Just Jared.
During his interview with Morgan, Hammer denied the claims, saying, "No, he did not. He did not pay for me to go to rehab."
When the veteran British journalist asked him whether the 'Iron Man' star had been "supportive" to him, Hammer, however, said, "I would say that yes, he has."
He explained hesitatingly, "I don’t want to bring anyone else into my situation. There are a number of people who have been extremely helpful and I’m incredibly grateful."
He shared that the ‘Oppenheimer’ star was helpful "in the way where [when] anyone in Hollywood who suffers from any sort of addiction issues — whether it be alcohol or process addiction or drugs — decides to get sober, that guy will find you, and he will help you. It’s amazing."
Hammer shared that RDJ gave him short yet effective advice: "Sit down, shut up, everything is going to be okay."
The Golden Globe-nominated actor also revealed that when he was going through a financial crisis, he worked as a timeshare salesman to pay his bills instead of asking his wealthy family for help.
Armie Hammer opens up about his past relationships
In the same interview, Armie Hammer further opened up about his multiple exes and the allegations associated with them.
Talking about the abuse allegations brought forth by Courtney Vucekovich, the actor said, "I will say this, there are people that I left who were hurt and who were upset. None of those people were hurt or upset because I pushed any sexual boundaries that they weren’t interested in exploring or trying," as per Just Jared.
Addressing the allegation that he branded his ex-girlfriend Paige Lorenze with a knife, he clarified, "I wouldn’t say brand. No … There was a scenario that we talked about beforehand, that we had discussed where, you know, I would basically take a little, tiny point and just kind of trace the letter 'A.'"
He continued, "Just like the tip of a small knife … I mean, there wasn’t even blood in the situation. It was more like a scrape. It’s along the lines of couples getting their own initials tattooed on each other."
Hammer also shared in the interview that though he "was faithful for a long time" to his wife Elizabeth Chambers, he eventually cheated. He accepted that he was involved with "probably more [people] than the average person would be exposed to" during their marriage.
"I wouldn’t say many hundreds," shared the actor, before adding, "No, you know, I would say enough."
Reflecting on his "dark, painful time," Hammer expressed, "It’s also something that I have to accept is on me. I had an affair on my wife. Obviously, I’m not the first person in the history of Hollywood to do that, but I did it, and it’s less than becoming behavior that I have to own."
