WASHINGTON, DC: Former January 6 Committee chairman Bennie Thompson criticized the Supreme Court's decision that granted Donald Trump limited immunity from criminal prosecution for certain actions taken during his presidency.

Thompson reacted to the decision by saying the Supreme Court was "lawless and corrupt" and accused the justices of undermining the rule of law.

Bennie Thompson says Supreme Court rewrote laws 'for their master' Donald Trump

Bennie Thompson, in a scathing attack on the Supreme Court, accused them of rewriting the constitution for Donald Trump.

"As someone who led Congress's investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, let me be very clear: today, a lawless and corrupt Supreme Court extreme conservative majority rewrote the Constitution for their master, Donald Trump, and dangerously undermined the rule of law in this country," Thompson's statement read which he also shared on X (formerly Twitter).

He further wrote, "By granting a twice-impeached felon absolute immunity for many of his acts that sought to undermine the legitimate results of the 2020 Presidential election, such as weaponizing the Department of Justice to do his campaign's bidding, these extreme Justices clearly put the ex-President above the law."

Bennie Thompson says SCOTUS' immunity decision grants more delays in Donald Trump's criminal cases

"Further, they have granted criminal defendant Trump even more delays-which is not only what he desperately wanted but will also deny the American people justice before a critical election," Bennie Thompson's statement read.

"This shameful decision will now act as a 'loaded weapon,' to quote from Justice Sotomayor's scathing dissent," he wrote.

"The only way for Americans to ensure that this weapon does not go off and to avoid another attempted coup like the one on January 6th is to elect honest and wise individuals to the highest office in the land-our freedom and our Republic depend on that now more than ever, especially since a rogue Supreme Court has chosen partisanship over their duty to do impartial justice," Thompson concluded.

Supreme Court's Donald Trump immunity decison

In a landmark decision with implications for the presidential race, six Supreme Court justices ruled that Donald Trump should have limited immunity from criminal prosecution, specifically on “official” actions taken during his presidency, punting it to the lower courts to determine what actions are considered official or unofficial. Three justices dissented.

Justices John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh, made up the majority opinion, while Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson made up the minority, per CNN.

GOP Senator JD Vance, one of Trump’s possible VP contenders, posted on X that the Supreme Court’s immunity decision is, "a massive win, not just for Trump but the rule of law. I’m still digesting but this may well destroy all of Jack Smith’s case against the president."

Vance included a picture of Trump’s reaction to the ruling within his post, where he wrote on Truth Social, "BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY."

Internet in splits over Bennie Thompson's remarks on Donald Trump's immunity

Netizens elicited mixed reactions, with some supporting Bennie Thompson and others criticizing him.

"Thank you, Bennie. I am terrified," one commented on X.

"So what exactly are our Dem politicians gonna do to fix this?" asked another.

"Now all Trump has to do is lie. The people have been let down by people trusting in the process and waiting too long. Expand the court now. How they decide things next year depends on it. @SenSchumer," another user expressed.

On the other hand, some were critical of Thompson's stance. "The disrespect you show for the rule of law is sickening," wrote one.

"SCOTUS merely affirmed the protections that have been enjoyed by every president in the history of this country. You, however, are knowingly subverting the concept of separate branches of government," added the user.

"Resign. You represent no one except yourself. You are a fraud. Taxation is theft. Maybe you and your J6 buds should investigate Pelosi," wrote another critic.
