NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Independent Senator Bernie Sanders is leaving no stone unturned in his support for Zohran Mamdani. Sanders said Mamdani’s victory clearly shows that progressives can win even without backing from party leadership.

“The party leadership did not support Mamdani in New York, and he won,” Sanders said. He emphasized that this victory carries a clear message: “People all over this country are rejecting Trumpism, and grassroots movements can win."

Bernie Sanders says Zohran Mamdani win proves progressives can prevail

Following Mamdani’s win, Sanders voiced his support for progressive candidates, including those running in Maine. “Party leadership is not supporting Platner in Maine, and I think he’s going to win," he said.

“So I think it is, you know, I think there is a growing understanding that leadership and defending the status quo and the inequalities that exist in America is not where the American people are," he continued.

He also pointed to the broader implications for the Democratic Party. “Of course, there’s an establishment, and of course there’s a division within the Democratic Party, there’s no secret to anybody here. What are we seeing in Maine? What did you see in New York City? What are you going to see all over this country?”

Why Zohran Mamdani’s NYC victory drew national attention?

Zohran Mamdani ran on a progressive platform focused on tackling economic inequality and the rising cost of living. His plans included rent freezes for residents in rent-stabilized units and building more affordable housing.

Mamdani also supported faster and free bus service, called for free childcare, and proposed city-run grocery stores to help reduce food prices.

His victory is considered the most significant win for progressives since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley in 2018. “It’s very reminiscent of 2018 when you had this superstar, young, telegenic and extremely capable candidate win a primary in New York City and set the world on fire,” said Matt Bennett, executive vice president for public affairs, as per CBS News.

Zohran Mamdani gives a strong victory speech after NYC win

During his victory speech, Mamdani said, "For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and well-connected that power does not belong in their hands, fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor, palms calloused from delivery bike handlebars, knuckles scarred from kitchen burns."

"These are not hands that have been allowed to hold power. And yet, over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it," he added.

The democratic socialist marked his win over Cuomo, the three-term former governor and son of a former governor. “We have toppled a political dynasty. I wish Andrew Cuomo all the best in his private life. But let tonight be the last time I mention his name as we turn the page,” Mamdani said.
